We have all heard about the biological clock. The idea is basically the impact of a woman's age on fertility and her well-being. Though there is nothing like the 'right' age to get pregnant, experts suggest that it is best if a woman conceives between 25 and 35. 

We recently talked to Dr. Meeta Chawhan, Senior Consultant, Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru, and asked her why is it risky for women to get pregnant after 35?

She shared that after 35, women have higher chances of complications such as chromosomal abnormalities in the baby, gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-term delivery, intrauterine growth restriction among others. 

Risk Of Pregnancy Complications

GDM Gestational diabetes is a common problem women face. It can occur to women less than 30 years. Age, weight, and lifestyle habits are some factors that can lead to this problem. If a woman is suffering from GDM Gestational diabetes then issues like miscarriage, congenital birth defects, and recurrent miscarriage too. It can also lead to C-section delivery.

Another common complication is Chromosomal abnormalities Down’s syndrome where the baby is born with physical aberrations, mental retardation and congenital heart conditions. These babies also have a higher risk of brain tumour and blood cancers. 

If the baby is not planned between a certain age, they can be born small in size and weight and might require NICU care. 

There are chances of a woman suffering from pregnancy-induced hypertension which increases 15 to 18 percent with age. It can lead to maternal complications such as hemorrhage, stroke, heart failure, fetal complications, NICU admissions among others.

All the above factors can lead to preterm delivery. It increases the rate of cesarean section delivery. A need for frequent monitoring may arise the chances of the baby's NICU admission.

How Can Women Prevent Pregnancy Complications?

The expert shared that with age, there are chances of women suffering from issues like miscarriage, diabetes, hypertension, difficulty in conceiving among others.

For a smooth pregnancy, women should pay a visit to the gynecologist. A gynecologist will give you folic acid supplementation. Folic acid supplements should be started 3 months before pregnancy but should always be taken after the gynecologist's consultation. The doctor will also suggest some tests which can help you have a healthy pregnancy. (Tips for women planning family)

Get a medical checkup regularly. Get all your blood tests done beforehand to prevent any complications.

Your weight plays a key role when it comes to pregnancy. If you are overweight, pregnancy can be risky for you and the baby. Keep exercising regularly. Keep your weight under control.

Along with your physical health, it is also important for you to keep a check on your mental health. Do meditation and yoga. Make healthy changes in your lifestyle. Try to stay positive to keep your stress levels low.
