The human body is a complex machine and its functioning may often confuse people. When it comes to women, there are a couple of more things, such as pregnancy and periods, related to which people often have questions. One of the most common among them all is that does irregular cycles lead to infertility?
To find the answer to this and some more questions, HerZindagi exclusively spoke to Dr Neelam Bhise, Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist, Director of Acme Fertility, Mumbai.
What Exactly Are Irregular Periods?
In general, a menstrual cycle after 25 to 35 days is considered normal, during which using two to three sanitary napkins per day is ideal. Not all women get periods on the same date, month on month. A woman can experience an irregular menstrual cycle due to lifestyle, stress or sometimes due to medical conditions like fibroids, PCOS, irregular ovulation, thyroid or obesity.
Women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles for prolonged periods are advised to seek medical help to diagnose the exact cause and seek treatment accordingly.
How Ovulation Is Related To Menstrual Dates?
Ovulation is when an egg is released from one of the ovaries, into the fallopian tube where it is then fertilised by the sperm. This is the most fertile time for a woman to get pregnant. A woman’s menstrual cycle indicates her ovulation period, in which the mature eggs are released. Menstrual cycles illustrate when she will be highly fertile for conception.
Now when a woman is undergoing irregular periods, the ovulation time becomes difficult to determine and this leads to a greater disadvantage for the couple. With that, it becomes difficult for a gynaecologist or fertility expert to consider the fertility window.
There are many types of irregular period. Amenorrhea – the absence of menstrual period, Oligomenorrhea – infrequent periods, Menorrhagia – heavy/prolonged bleeding during periods, Metrorrhagia – regular bleeding between periods.
Do Irregular Cycles Lead To Infertility?
No! There have been multiple cases of women with these issues still being able to conceive. Many couples are often advised by family members that a woman’s irregular periods lead to infertility. But it is imperative to understand that every woman between the age group of 16 to 50 years can ovulate and get pregnant at different points in time. Although a woman with irregular menstrual cycles still ovulates, the ovulation schedule is inconsistent every month. In a regular cycle, fertile days tracking is easier than in irregular cycles.
Fertility Treatments For Women With Irregular Menstrual Cycles
Medicines are given by fertility doctor after doing sonography, medicines start from the second day to induce ovulation.
Sonographies are done from period 8th day, 2 to 3 times to check follicle (egg bag) growth. Once ovulation is evident woman is advised to plan for pregnancy.
Ovulation Injection (Trigger Shot)
One injection can be given to women who have ovulation dysfunction. Patients with irregular cycle often tend to have un-ruptured follicles or cysts in the ovary.
Women with ovarian cysts (magic potion for ovarian cysts), heavy bleeding, excessive painful periods should visit a gynaecologist for evaluation and correction of menstrual disturbances.
