The second wave of the deadly coronavirus hit us recently and the situation has been getting worse each day. Cases have been on a rise all across the country.

While many infected by the virus couldn't make it, others are recovering and getting back to normalcy.

Loss of smell is one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19. It is usually followed by a loss of taste. A lot of patients who recovered from COVID-19 complain that they are unable to get back their sense of smell. 

The condition is also known as anosmia and people are suffering from it because COVID-19 affects the nervous system which leads to loss of smell. While some people are able to regain it in a few days or weeks after recovering from the coronavirus, for others it is going on for much longer. 

Even after triggering their sense of smell many times, people have been unable to regain their smell. So we asked a health expert, Dr. Mukesh Singh Pachahara, Senior Resident (Medicine), Delhi.

How To Regain Sense Of Smell After COVID?

Have Multivitamins

The expert shared that the sense of smell can be regained usually with the help of vitamin B12 which is present in multivitamins. 

Inhale Coffee Beans Or Eucalyptus Oil

Inhaling coffee beans or strong smelling substances like eucalyptus oil or pungent smell can help in regaining the sense of smell. The expert, however, shared that it can lead to a headache. 

Sniff Your Favourite Fragrances

One can pick any 2-4 scents or fragrances that they enjoy and sniff them twice a day. Make sure you do it for at least 20 seconds. While sniffing anything, make sure you focus on the scent and try to recall how was it experiencing the smell of it when you had a sense of smell. 

Chew Ginger 

Ginger or adrak has an active constituent called gingerol which contributes to its pungent aroma and flavour. It can help improve your sense of smell. Take a small piece of ginger and chew it or you can also sip on ginger tea

Drink Lemon Tea

Lemon is packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and anti-microbial properties. It is believed to be effective in treating infections because it can help clear excessive mucous deposits in the nasal passage. Another way to regain the sense of smell is by drinking lemon tea everyday. 

In a glass of warm water, squeeze a lemon and add some honey. Mix well and drink this tea twice a day for relief. This will provide relief from the nasal congestion and help you get back your sense of smell. 

Practice Kapalbhati And Anuloma Viloma Pranayama

In an interview, Baba Ramdev shared that one can regain the sense of smell by doing Kapalbhati and Anuloma Viloma Pranayama. Both breathing exercises are believed to be great for our respiratory system. Practising it everyday will help you cleanse and strengthen your respiratory system and expel any stale air or waste products from your lungs. (3 Pranayams For Immunity)

Do Nasya Treatment 

Castor oil too is believed to be extremely effective in enhancing smell. It has antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties which can help in regaining sense of smell. One can do nasya treatment at home by putting a drop of warm castor oil in the nostrils in the day and at night.
