Nasal congestion is something none of us want especially these days amid the pandemic when it can be one of the symptoms of coronavirus. But what can we do when the winter chill catches you off guard and gives you a miserable time? There are home remedies that help in opening the stuffy nose and even help relieve the cough you need the least. 

Hydration

We are advised to drink water everyday but when you have a cold, hydration is more important than anything else for curing a cold. Warm water helps in thinning the mucus that clogs our nasal passage. Keep having water, tea, juices and hot soups which also soothe the throat. 

Warm Compress

This is a basic taught by my grandmother and is very effective. Warm compresses on the nose and forehead are very comforting and even open nasal congestions. Do this a few times a day as it will ease out the inflammation as well. 

Steam

Earlier we were asked by our elders to take steam by pouring hot water in a bowl and placing our towel on our heads to trap the steam and inhale it. But today there are steamers that are used for facials and can also be used for attaining glowing skin. You can also put antiseptic herbs in the steamer like peppermint or cardamom seeds 2-3 times a day. 

Essential Oil Aroma

Troubled breathing, incessant dripping nose make us feel weak and disturb us in our daily activities. Mix eucalyptus oil with warm water and keep it for 15 minutes. Or mix in peppermint oil. Inhale the aromas and see how effectively it helps in clearing your nose. You could also opt for a humdifier.

Garlic Soup

Soups are anyway excellent in not just helping with hydration but also in giving us nutrition, aiding our immunity levels. When this soup consists of garlic then it gets better. You can also have garlic cloves 2 to 3 times daily as that is one way to relieve your stuffy nose. 

Lemon

Mix 2 tbsp lemon juice with half tsp black pepper powder and a pinch of salt and then apply it on your nose. Leave it on for a few minutes and then you will see the effect that will make you fall in love with this remedy.

Ginger

Have ginger tea to unclog the nasal passages. It has high anti-inflammatory properties which worked effectively.  

Fenugreek 

Methi seeds or fenugreek seeds must be mixed in a glass of water, heated and then consumed 2-3 times a day. The combination of water and damp fenugreek helps in thinning down the mucus and opens the sinus cavities.

Herbal Tea

Teas like blackberry, chamomile, rosemary leaves, blackberry or rosemary are considered excellent for treating a stuffy nose. Consume this tea every day.

Spicy food is not everyone's first love but it definitely works well on unclogging stuffed noses. It thins down the mucus and you later thank for the spice in it in case you do not like spicy food.
