You might have heard about the watermelon and milk drink which has gained a lot of popularity in the past few days. Due to the summer season in place, people are experimenting with different types of refreshing and tasty drinks. Milk is probably the healthiest of all and watermelon sure tops the list of must-have fruits in this hot season. Despite having these benefits, consuming watermelon and milk is not a good idea. Here are a few reasons which will help you figure out why these two items should never be mixed together:
Watermelon and milk are usually avoided because of the stomach issues they can trigger. Many people drink the combination in summers, in which milk, watermelon, and roohafza are blended. Though the drink tastes absolutely amazing, some people experience problems such as stomach aches and discomfort after consuming the drink.
According to Ayurveda, watermelon and milk are of 'viruddh' or opposite nature. Milk is said to be of 'madhur' or sweet nature, while watermelon is more towards the citric nature. Hence, combining these two together might lead to stomach issues and digestive problems.
Though each body reacts differently, but it still might experience gas related problems after consuming watermelon and milk together. Watermelon is a very healthy fruit with loads of vitamins A and C, potassium, magnesium. It also contains simple sugar which is easily digested and is composed of 96% of water, which is why it doesn’t stay for too long in your stomach.
On the other hand, milk is rich in fat, Vitamin D, and proteins. So, if you mix watermelon and milk together, acidic components of watermelon can bind the protein present in milk, which will make the combination stay in your stomach for long. This can further give rise to gas leading to loose motions in many people.
Consuming watermelon and milk can also give rise to problems like nausea and bloating. You might experience such a situation when watermelon and milk stay in your stomach for long. As the nature of both the food items are opposite, your body takes a while to adjust to it. Usually bloating is caused when your body retains water. Water retention happens when your body fears dehydration. Ironically, the only way to cure water retention is by drinking more water.
You must always remember that everybody is different from another and you might not experience any issue after drinking the combination. On the other hand, some people might be more sensitive towards a particular food combination and their bodies might react differently. Thus, you must always check whether a particular food suits your body or not before consuming it in large quantities.
Benefits Of Having Watermelon And Milk Separately
As said above, watermelon and milk both are extremely healthy food products when consumed separately. Watermelon is a storehouse of necessary vitamins, along with antioxidants and amino acid citrulline. Citrulline is best known in the sporting world because it helps the athletes in improving their performance. Thus, you can consume diced watermelon for increased strength and muscles. Watermelon juice, when consumed in summers, makes it an amazing detox drink.
Packed with nutrients and minerals, milk has a long list of health benefits. Drinking milk helps in maintaining bone health and is also said to prevent osteoporosis. Milk has been often described as a 'whole meal' in itself because of its nutrient capacity. You can either have it cold or drink a cup of warm milk before going to bed. Drinking warm milk before bed helps in better sleep and aids the digestive process.
