As one of our most sensitive sense organs, the eyes hold a special place in our existence. They serve as our direct connection to the world around us. Therefore, we must prioritise maintaining healthy eyes to fully experience the beautiful world around us. Modern lifestyle places maximum strain on our eyes due to excessive screentime, prolonged hours of work and study, exposure to artificial and bad lighting, and poor diet. In the digital age, wrong habits, improper posture during studying or reading have been the reasons behind eye strain and defective eye vision. Yoga practices, when included in the daily routine, can help prevent eye strain and vision defects.

Palming

Palming revitalizes the eye muscles. It stimulates the circulation of aqueous humour, helping in vision correction.

Method:

Sit with eyes closed, rub the palms vigorously to generate some warmth. Place the palms gently over the eyelids without applying pressure on the eyes. Feel the warmth and energy being transferred to the eyes and the eye muscles being relaxed. Repeat the procedure thrice.

Blinking

It helps in relaxing the eye muscles.

Method:

Sit with eyes open. Blink the eyes 10 times quickly. Close the eyes and relax for 5 or 6 breaths. Repeat the process 5 times. This exercise makes blinking become spontaneous as many people with defective eye vision blink unnaturally.

Nose-tip gazing

This practice improves the accommodating and focusing power of the eye muscles.

Method:

Sit in sukhasana with spine straight, hold the right arm directly in front of the nose. Make a fist, keeping the thumb pointing upward. Focus both the eyes on the tip of the thumb. Slowly bring the thumb to the nose tip, keeping the eyes focused on the thumb tip. Repeat this 10 times. Finally, close the eyes and conclude with palming of the eyes.

Sideways viewing

It helps reduce eye strain and also corrects squint.

Method:

Sit in Dandasana. Extend the arms sideways at shoulder level, forming fists with the thumbs pointing upward. Ensure that both thumbs remain visible in your peripheral vision while keeping the head neutral, fixed, and facing forward, with the gaze at eye level. Without moving the head, shift the focus of the eyes to the left thumb, then to the space between the eyebrows (bhrumadhya), then to the right thumb, back to bhrumadhya, and return to the left thumb. Repeat this sequence 10 times. Conclude the practice with palming.
