Laptops, smartphones, social media, it has all got digital today. Our world has become digital with so many technologies flowing in, making everything so accessible for us. However, there has been an increased use of electronic gadgets all this while, especially during this pandemic.
This one big reason why so many of us have been suffering from symptoms like eye discomfort, watering, light sensitivity, headache, blurred vision, itchy eye, twitching, red eyes among others.
Let us tell you that our increased use of electronic gadgets is why many of us have been suffering from this digital eye strain.
We talked to Dr. Anchal Gupta, Ophthalmologist, Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgeon and she shared that almost 59 % of people who use the screen for more than 4 hours suffer from this problem. The expert has shared some tips which will help you prevent this issue.
Correct Posture And Distance
The expert shared that one must sit in the correct posture. The screen should be slightly below the eye level and should be at one hand distance away from you.
Rule Of 20
It is very important to take a break every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. During these 20 seconds, one must look away from the screen as it helps relieve eye strain.
The expert shared that it is important to blink often as it keeps the eyes lubricated. Usually, a person blinks 15-20 times but the continuous use of a screen can reduce the blink rate.
Use Of Blue Light Blocking Glasses
Make sure you use anti-reflective or blue light blocking glasses as they reduce eye strain. According to research, blue light can affect sleep patterns and lead to irritation. Wearing blue-blocking specs or lenses can help provide relief from discomfort and improve sleep quality.
Other Quick Tips
The expert shared that one must use the correct glasses and avoid using contact lenses (tips to keep in mind when wearing contact lens)for a long time. You can get special glasses for yourself which prevent the harmful blue rays from reaching your eyes.
In between work, one must exercise the eyes by rotating, doing eye movements. Close with palms and let the eyes relax in between.
Have a healthy diet and drink a lot of water. The expert suggested foods like fruits like bananas, vegetables, nuts. She also suggested that one must use healthy cooking oils for preparing food. Focus on foods that are rich in omega-3 as they are good for your eyes. (food to improve vision)
Use lubricating eye drops to provide relief to dry eyes. Make sure you consult your doctor before using any eye drops.
In case you have a persisting eye problem, do consult a doctor.
We hope this guide helps you prevent your eyes from strain. Keep a check on your posture, distance from the screen. Avoid using your phone or laptop on days you are not working.
