Most of us need tea or coffee to kickstart our day. While many can have multiple rounds of hot beverages throughout the day, some restrict themselves to a couple of cups. Whatever your quantity, it is imperative to know at this juncture that any amount of scalding hot tea or/and coffee will do you no good. Piping hot beverages are harmful and pose several risks to your health, even making you susceptible to getting oesophagal cancer. Several studies in the past have established the connection between the two. Dr. Aashita Jain, IVF Specialist, Birla Fertility & IVF, Surat, Gujarat, shares more.
Study Finds Link Between Hot Tea Consumption, Cancer
A 2022 research paper titled "Hot Tea Consumption and Esophageal Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies" found respondents who consumed hot tea stood at a "significantly increased risk of Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but no significant association for esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC)."
While ESCC can impact any portion of the oesophagus, it generally affects the middle third or upper part. EAC, meanwhile, is a cancer that happens in the glandular cells of your lower esophagus, near the stomach.
Dr. Jain says, "Drinking tea or coffee is a daily ritual for many, but when it comes to consuming them at very high temperatures, caution is warranted."

3 Health Risks of Drinking Piping Hot Beverages
Dr. Jain lists 3 health risks of consuming piping hot beverages:
a) Esophageal Damage
Regular consumption of piping hot beverages (above 65°C or 149°F) has been linked to thermal injury to the esophagus. Repeated exposure to such high temperatures can lead to chronic irritation and inflammation, potentially increasing the risk of esophageal cancer.
b) Sensitivity of Oral Tissues
Extremely hot liquids can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach lining, which can be especially problematic for people with underlying conditions like acid reflux or gastritis.
c) Temperature and Digestion
This is specifically for pregnant women, who may already experience heightened sensitivity in their digestive tract due to hormonal changes. Very hot beverages can exacerbate acid reflux, heartburn, and discomfort.
In conclusion, she says that in optimum quantity and at the correct temperature, tea and coffee can have health benefits. "Both are rich in antioxidants, which can support overall health. Also, moderate caffeine intake can enhance focus and energy levels. However, it’s important to avoid extremes—both in temperature and quantity," Dr. Jain wraps up.
