Now more than ever we need to take care of our mental health. Many are feeling underwhelmed and are slipping into depression. The reason behind the same can be many, but the important thing to do is to stay strong and keep fighting. While feeling low, certain recreational activities, exercises, and most importantly wholesome food can help. We are not just talking about tea and coffee, but calming food that relaxes your brain and helps you to clear your mind. Some of such ingredients are easily found spices at your home, others are herbs that might be present at your or your neighbour’s garden. All you need to do is consume these on a regular basis and stay happy and healthy! 

Cumin

Around the globe, almost every household use cumin to add extra aroma to their food. In India, this spice is widely used in almost all kinds of curries. Rich in iron, it is multi-beneficial. Not only it helps to lose weight, but it is great to calm the nerves down. To extract extra benefit from cumin, have it besides just eating with your curries. 

How To Eat? 

  • Boil one cup of water in a bowl. 
  • Take ½ teaspoon cumin seeds and add in the boiling water.
  • Let it cook for 2 minutes and drink the cumin water early morning. 

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha can be considered one of the most energising and rejuvenating herbs, which allows the body to cope with physical and emotional stress. This herb is effective in lowering down the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, as per the study published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine. One starts feeling stressed when the stress hormone shoots up, due to one or the other reason. This then amplifies causing an imbalance in other hormones. Regular intake of this herb will make one feel less stressed and mentally calm.

How To Eat 

  • Boil 1 cup milk and add ½ teaspoon ashwagandha powder. 
  • Consume about half an hour before going to bed at night.

Garlic

Garlic is a flavourful spice with allicin in it. This compound keeps you from heart diseases and also help shed some fat. When it comes to anxiety and stress, garlic will fight the feeling of lethargy and will boost the immune system to a great extent. This food is also packed with antioxidants, which neutralise free radicals in the body. 

How To Eat

  • Take 1-2 garlic cloves, peel it, and wash it. 
  • Cut or crush the garlic clove and have with ½ cup of lukewarm water. 

Lavender

Due to its calming and refreshing aroma, lavender has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for anxiety and nervousness. The common use of this aromatic herb is prepping essential oil from it for aromatherapy. As per health reports, massaging the body with its fragrant oil reduces anxiety levels. You’re feeling a lack of enthusiasm? Use lavender oil to feel positive again.  Lavender is also believed to act as a sedative, mainly for those areas that are associated with emotions in the brain. 

How To Use?

  • Boil 1 cup of water in a pot. 
  • Add 2 to 4 drops of lavender oil in it. 
  • Inhale the vapours and calm your nerves.

Tulsi

Tulsi plant is easily available in Indian households. In case someone is suffering from chronic stress, Tulsi consumption can help to calm him/her down. Because, this herbal plant increases the level and activity of antioxidants, which safely interact with free radicals and fight their negative effects. While Ayurveda suggests using Tulsi on a regular basis to fight psychological and physical stress, modern scientific studies, on the other hand, recommends that Tulsi is effective in treating anxiety and stress, as per health reports. 

How To Eat? 

  • In a half cup of water, add 3-5 tulsi leaves. 
  • Boil for 5-7 minutes, then add lemon juice. 
  • Strain and drink to feel better.
