Air pollution causes a lot of distress and harm to the respiratory system and affects its normal functions. Air pollutants are minute particles in the air that get stuck in the respiratory passages. It causes throat irritation and various respiratory issues like shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, increase the risk of asthmatic attacks or lung disorders etc. Air pollutants increase the frequency of respiratory infections that may be cause chronic and acute respiratory infections.
Dr. Arati Soman, Ayurvedic Expert, Nisarga Herbs, told HerZindagi that "these small particles in air clog the pores of the skin and lead to skin ailments like acne and pimples. These particles are so small that they penetrate the skin of your scalp, causing irritation, dandruff and baldness. It affects hair and skin leading to the ageing process in them. Air pollutants lead to dryness of skin eyes and take away the luster of hair. Many times we see reactions like itching and rashes caused on the skin.
"But most prominently air pollutants cause irritation in the throat, hoarseness of voice, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies and congestion in lungs. Air pollution affects our eyes to a huge extent. It causes drying of eyes, itching and redness of eyes. Regular cleansing and taking proper care of our vital organ is very important and hence cleansing should be done externally as well as internally. Herbal remedies can be very useful in maintaining a healthy balance in the body and fight against air pollutants," she added.
Flushing out toxins with the use of cleansing agents can be done with the use of herbal medicines. Gargling with warm water by adding a pinch of salt and turmeric could be useful in reducing inflammation to some extent.
Also taking anti-allergic medications is also an option to reduce symptoms like itching and congestions. But these remedies work for a short duration.
Herbal remedies can be useful to cure and reduce such effects of air pollution ruling out the root cause.
