Since childhood, our parents have asked us to have healthy food, all vegetables especially carrots for improving our eye vision. As you age, you tend to forget how important these small things are unless you are into fitness. If you believe in Ayurveda, then here are some herbs that can be used for your eye vision.
An old saying goes that our eyes are the window of our soul. Due to the excessive exposure to light and overuse of digital devices, our eyes go through so much, followed by little or no care. As per ayurvedic practices, a body is a combination of all the elements.
Dr. Sandeep Jassal, Senior Integrative Medicine, Preventive Health & Holistic Wellness Physician, Kamree, told HerZindagi that "Shalakya Tantra is one of the eight parts of Ayurveda which describes in detail about intensive eye care. Eyes are also the point of Pitta Dosha, and since Pitta dosha gets worse as we age, the health of eyes also declines as we grow old. Other factors affect the conditions of the eyes such as hot water head baths, smoking, staying awake at night, looking at digital screens for a prolonged period, air pollution, etc.
"Ayurvedic practices, medicines, and therapies have been proven to treat many eye ailments. One of the earliest procedures to treat cataracts was done by an ayurvedic practitioner, Sushruta. Ancient science works on attaining balance by utilizing herbs externally and internally," he added.
Following are some of the most beneficial ayurvedic herbs for eye care solutions advised by Dr. Jassal:
As the name signifies, Triphala is a formula consisting of three fruits - haritaki, amla, and bibhitaki. This potent ayurvedic herb impacts three doshas in the body and helps to balance them out. The medicinal properties of Triphala help in lowering down the toxicity levels in the body. The herb can be used externally and internally. Triphala is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which help in reducing inflammation, redness, and oxidative stress in and around the eyes.
The Ginkgo Biloba
The Ginkgo Biloba helps treat various conditions such as blood disorders, memory loss, and of course, eye health. Native to China, this plant is made into capsules, tablets, and syrups. Ginkgo is a natural antioxidant and is primarily famous for treating normal to intensive glaucoma.
Every Indian vouch for the strength of almonds. It is used to increase memory power and eye health. The ideal practice is to take 5-7 almonds, soak them overnight and then have them with breakfast. However, there are no hard and fast rules over almond consumption. Almonds contain Vitamin E, and it is proven to promote healthy tissues and works on age-related problems such as degradation of eyesight. Vitamin E also helps with the treatment of cataracts.
Calendula flower is a potent herb for various eye issues. Also known as Pot Marigold, calendula has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. It is used to treat and improve eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, redness, swelling, and general eye irritations.
"The eye is composed of the four elements of nature. The muscles are governed by the earth, colour by air, blood vessels by fire, and tear ducts by water. The elements, when balanced, result in the best health for the eyes," said Dr. Jassal.
"Simply using the herbs mentioned above will not help you attain the perfect eye condition; various other factors are involved. Few general practices, when done consistently, will keep your eyes healthy throughout your lifetime. Feet massage, eyewash with Triphala, simple eye exercise, and regular sleep will keep your eye muscles strong," he added.
