Keeping this in mind, it's important to gain the necessary information about the diseases and take the necessary steps to protect yourself from the flu.

We reached out to our health expert Dr Seema Dhir, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon to understand what swine flu is, its causes, precautions, and the remedies to follow.

What Is Swine Flu

“Swine flu, also known as H1N1, is a viral infection caused by the influenza virus. In 2009, the World Health Organization declared H1N1 a global epidemic, resulting in approximately 284400 deaths worldwide. This infection primarily affects pigs, targeting their lungs. In humans, H1N1 attacks the respiratory system, including the throat, nose, and lungs. The virus is highly contagious, spreading easily from person to person through the air. When we breathe, the virus enters our body, making it essential to take preventive measures,” said Dr Seema.
