Let’s face it: Life as a woman is a juggling act. Between work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy to put your health on the back burner. But here’s the thing: your health is the foundation of everything you do. Regular health screenings aren’t just a checkbox on a to-do list; they’re your first line of defense against potential health issues. Dr Archana Kankal, Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory, Nagar Road, Pune, breaks down the essential health screenings every woman should prioritise at different stages of life.
Health Screenings Every Woman Should Have
Adolescence (Ages 10-19)
The teenage years are a whirlwind of change, physically, emotionally, and hormonally. It’s the perfect time to lay the groundwork for a lifetime of good health.
Menstrual Health Monitoring
Dr Kankal emphasises that irregular cycles can be a red flag for conditions like PCOS or thyroid issues. “Teenage girls should track their periods and consult a doctor if they notice anything unusual,” she says.
HPV Vaccination
Cervical cancer is a major concern in India, but it’s also preventable. The HPV vaccine is a game-changer for teenage girls. “Getting vaccinated early can significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer later in life,” Dr Kankal advises.
Nutrition Assessment
Anemia is a silent epidemic among adolescent girls in India. Regular checks for iron levels and other nutritional deficiencies can prevent long-term health issues. “Good nutrition during these formative years sets the stage for a healthier adulthood,” she adds.
Reproductive Years (Ages 20-40)
This is the phase when women often juggle careers, relationships, and family planning. It’s also a critical time to stay on top of your health.
Breast Cancer Screening
While mammograms are typically recommended after 40, women with a family history of breast cancer should start earlier. Dr Kankal suggests regular Clinical Breast Examinations (CBE) as part of routine check-ups. “Early detection saves lives,” she stresses.
Cervical Cancer Screening
Dr Kankal recommends starting Pap smears at 21 and repeating them every three years. For women aged 30-65, a combined Pap smear and HPV DNA test every five years offers more comprehensive screening.
Reproductive Health Checks
Annual gynaecological visits are non-negotiable. These check-ups can catch infections, irregularities, or other issues early. “This is also the time to discuss family planning and fertility options with your doctor,” Dr Kankal notes.
Perimenopause and Menopause (Ages 40+)
As oestrogen levels drop, women face new health challenges. Regular screenings can help manage these changes effectively.
Bone Density Screening
Osteoporosis becomes a real concern post-menopause. Dr Kankal advises bone density tests, especially after 65. “Women with risk factors like a family history of osteoporosis should consider testing earlier,” she says.
Cardiovascular Health
Heart disease risk spikes after menopause. Regular screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes are crucial. “Don’t wait for symptoms to appear—prevention is key,” Dr Kankal warns.
Mammograms
Annual mammograms are a must for women over 40. “Depending on your risk factors, your doctor might recommend starting earlier,” she adds.

Senior Years (Ages 65+)
In the golden years, health screenings become even more critical to maintain quality of life.
Colorectal Cancer Screening
Starting at 50, regular screenings for colorectal cancer are essential. Options include colonoscopies or faecal occult blood tests. “Early detection can make all the difference,” Dr Kankal emphasises.
Vision and Hearing Tests
Age-related vision and hearing loss can impact independence. Regular screenings help catch issues early and keep you thriving.
Mental Health Screening
Depression and anxiety are common but often overlooked in older women. “Mental health is just as important as physical health,” Dr Kankal reminds us. Regular evaluations ensure timely interventions.
Preventive health screenings aren’t just about catching diseases early, they’re about empowering women to take control of their health. In India, where women are often the backbone of families and communities, these screenings can make a world of difference.
So, whether you’re a teenager navigating puberty, a busy professional in your 30s, or a senior enjoying retirement, remember: your health deserves your attention. Schedule those screenings, ask questions, and take charge of your well-being.
