Spirituality is the science of the Spirit. It leads us to the realisation of the truth, to Enlightenment. It helps us realise who we are — we are not the body, mind and ego but the Soul, a Spark Of Unique Life. The Soul is a part of SIP, the Supreme Immortal Power. This realisation or awakening to the truth liberates us from the triple suffering of the body, mind and ego. We realise that we are the very Divinity we worship. Spirituality gives us purpose, which is the key to true spiritual joy.

The path of spirituality is the path to peace, love and bliss. Spiritual practices like meditation, mindfulness help us to be calm and peaceful. Peace, we don’t have to find. We only have to still our mind. When we still the mind, we reach the state of mindfulness or consciousness, and it is in this state that we experience peace. It is in this state that the intellect is activated, and we can attain the ultimate spiritual goal of Enlightenment.

The Power Of Spiritual Practices

Prayer, retreats, introspection, and contemplation — all spiritual practices—help us become calm and more peaceful. Prayer is a two-way communication with God. It is an expression of faith and trust and gives us strength, courage and resilience. We understand that there’s a power — God exists and life is not meaningless. Retreats, spent in nature, in solitude, are ideal for silencing the mind, for peace and contemplation. Nature, like all of us, is a manifestation of God. That is why we feel so much joy when we are close to nature. Introspection and reflection help us focus, bring clarity and lead to greater self-awareness.

Embracing Spiritual Truths

If we are on the spiritual path, realising or even understanding spiritual truths can change the paradigm of our life. For instance, we understand that death is not the end but a bend to transcend. Either we are reborn or liberated. If we are enlightened, we attain Moksha. We realise that the trauma we face is because of our Karma. As per the Law of Karma, what we sow, we reap. Hence, we acknowledge responsibility for what we do and accept circumstances that we can’t change as an outcome of our deeds. We rejoice when suffering comes our way, knowing that our Karma is being settled. We also realise that ultimately, everything is a Leela of God. This world is Maya, a cosmic illusion, a drama, and we are but actors who come and go. We realise that nothing belongs to us. We come empty-handed, and we will return empty-handed. Why live with greed or run the material race to become an ace? Instead, we live with spiritual grace. We exit the highway of achievement and choose to live with contentment and fulfilment, fulfilling our needs.

Awakening The Soul

Spirituality, therefore, helps us overcome material desires and suffering. Even being on the spiritual path creates a shift in perspective. While not everybody may attain Enlightenment, the spiritual journey itself helps us evolve, grow, become calmer and more blissful. Realising the truth that we are not the body that dies, nor the mind that we cannot find, we are the immortal Soul, which liberates us from all sorrow and misery as we live. We live in the state of SatChitAnanda — Truth, Consciousness, Bliss. When the body dies, we attain Moksha; we become one with God.
