Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex and often misunderstood condition that affects millions of women worldwide. While it's commonly associated with irregular periods and fertility issues, recognising and paying attention to its early warning signs can help you deal with it and recover. In this article, we will share expert insights on early warning signs of PCOS byDr Madhulika Singh, Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, Prayagraj.

5 Signs Of PCOS That Should Not Be Ignored

The symptoms of PCOS are often mild or mistaken for other conditions. "Most women who have this condition may not even realise they are living with PCOS until it is late. Hence, early diagnosis and detection becomes extremely important as it can help control the condition effectively and prevent long-term complications," said Dr Singh.

5 Signs Of PCOS

1. Irregular Periods

One of the most notable indicators of PCOS is irregular menstruation. Women who experience missed periods such as less than nine menstrual cycles in a year, or episodes of extremely heavy bleeding, are likely to have PCOS. Such irregularities suggest that ovulation may not be occurring regularly, which is usually due to underlying hormonal imbalance, giving rise to condition like PCOS.

2. Excess Hair On Hair And Body

Another common symptom is excess facial or body hair, especially on the face, chest, or back. This condition is known as hirsutism and is caused by elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) which are usually found at higher levels in women with PCOS.

3. Acne-Prone And Oily Skin

Persistent acne or oily skin, particularly on the chin or jawline, may also be a sign of hormonal imbalance. Unlike occasional breakouts, this kind of acne tends to be more stubborn and resists normal skin care measures, making it another possible indicator of PCOS.

4. Unexplained Weight Gain

Additionally, weight gain, particularly around the midsection, or difficulty losing weight even after following a healthy diet and exercise regimen, could be another warning sign. These symptoms are most often linked to insulin resistance, which is one of the major forces behind PCOS development. This may also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

5. Thinning Scalp

Finally, hair thinning on the scalp or prominent hair loss that resembles male-pattern baldness could also be a sign. Like excess hair growth, hair loss too can result from increased androgen levels and can be distressing for those experiencing it.

"If you are noticing one or more of these signs, it is important to consult a doctor or fertility specialist. With the right medical support and lifestyle changes such as a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and stress management, PCOS can be effectively managed. Early intervention can not only improve reproductive health but also help safeguard long-term metabolic and emotional well-being. The key is not to ignore the signs but to take timely action that empowers women to take charge of their health," said Dr Madhulika.
