The diet of women during and before their menstrual cycle significantly affects their overall health. With numerous guidelines on do's and don'ts, it's essential to understand the intricacies of the period cycle. Factors like duration, bleeding volume, and cramp severity provide valuable insights into women's well-being. Interestingly, while many women find coffee comforting during periods, excessive caffeine consumption can disrupt their menstrual cycle.
As we observe International Coffee Day 2024 on October 1, 2024, let's learn from our expert Dietitian Manpreet, Gut Health Coach about what impact the consumption of tea and coffee has on periods.

“Menstruation is directly linked to estrogen and progesterone levels. These two sex hormones regulate women's periods and fertility. Consuming tea or coffee increases cortisol, a stress hormone, in the body. Elevated cortisol levels, in turn, disrupt the delicate hormonal balance by boosting estrogen production. Consequently, this surge in estrogen can delay menstrual cycles,” Dr Manpreet.
One week before your period, consider reducing or eliminating caffeinated tea and coffee to support menstrual health. Although caffeine may offer temporary pain relief, it can increase stress, anxiety, and bleeding, while disrupting period flow. “Women with irregular cycles should exercise caution, as caffeine can worsen irregularity. Additionally, excessive coffee consumption (over three cups daily) can cause dehydration, increased urination, and intensified cramps. By limiting caffeine, you can alleviate menstrual symptoms and maintain overall wellness,” said Dr Manpreet.
