Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra – Director, The Yoga Institute says that people have a lot of misconceptions about Migraines and Headaches. Headaches can go away in 3-4 hours, whereas, a migraine can stay for 2-3 days. The throbbing headache in migraine is quite difficult to deal with. Another myth that people have is that only medicines can cure migraines.

Well, medicines can only suppress the symptoms and not cure it from the root level. Yoga strongly believes in sticking to the basics, and stay away from extra spices and flavors. Try to cut out all the 5 white poisons from your life, junk food, packaged food, and stale items. Follow a Sattvik food diet, in which you include all the fresh green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and one that is easier to digest. Keep yourself hydrated and have a magnesium-rich diet, that would include almonds, spinach, yogurt, etc.

Indulge in activities that make you happy and help to destress yourself. Try to make it a point to spend some time with Nature, be it walking barefoot on the grass or just simply looking outside your window, into the greenery. Give your body enough rest for it to rejuvenate on its own, and go to bed by 10 PM. You can also take regular massages, mainly targeting the neck, shoulder, and head.

Migraines are born out of neurological disorders, for which Yoga techniques like Asanas and Pranayamas work wonders. So much so that with regular and dedicated practice, there will be lesser attacks of Migraine and then no attacks. Kriyas like Vaman Dhauti, Kapal Randra Dhauti, and Jala Neti are helpful for treating Migraine as it directly targets the root cause within.

Hastapadasana, Adho Mukho Svanasana, and Shashankasana must be practiced daily as it helps to improve the blood circulation in the entire body. To revitalize the nervous system and to calm the mind, pranayama practices like Anulom Vilom and Abdominal Breathing should be practiced regularly.

It is important to handle the mind as well. Try to practice Mauna every day, even if it’s for 40-50 minutes, as it greatly helps to quieten the mind and thoughts. Try to consciously draw your senses in with Pratyahara, and then gradually move onto Meditation.

Regular and consistent practice of Yoga can definitely help to cure and get rid of Migraine. All you have to do is make Yoga a way of your life and let this lifestyle surprise you then!
