“Acharya Charaka mentions about 10 different time periods for the administration of any medicine in Ayurveda. This depends on the nature and disease condition of the patient. Among these, the first two time periods are Abhakta (before food on an empty stomach usually in the early morning) and Pragbhakta (a few minutes before the meal). The administration of garlic to a person depends on the disease indications in the person,” said Dr Faisal.

Dr Mohammed explained that the result of consuming garlic on an empty stomach depends on the prakruti (nature) of the person who consumes it. Before taking the garlic, it is necessary to know about your strength of digestive fire and gut response. During the time you consume garlic on an empty stomach, you also have to manage your food and lifestyle choices and avoid anything that can cause excess heat in your body as the literature indicates that garlic as a drug has strong penetrating and heat generating properties. Someone with intolerance to garlic can experience symptoms like allergic skin rashes, increase in the temperature, head-aches, heartburn, flatulence, etc.

Dr Faisal said that milk is said to be a good adjuvant, as per Ayurveda, that helps you overcome intolerance towards garlic. Ayurveda also mentions the procedure of boiling the garlic bulb in milk to overcome its ill effects and to facilitate its clinical benefit under the name ‘Lashuna Kseera Paka.’

“The ideal dose of garlic paste is 1-6 grams and in cold season it can be taken up to 50 bulbs which comes around 100-150 grams. In a few clinical practices, it is advised to consume it by gradually increasing the number of garlic bulbs day by day along with milk on empty stomach,” said Dr Mohammed.

Garlic is usually advised to the patients suffering from high blood pressure as it lowers the cholesterol level in the body. Additionally, it has the ability to regulate your blood pressure by correcting metabolism. It also prevents certain kinds of stroke due to its blood thinning property. Those who are already on blood thinner medication are advised to avoid garlic.
