Fruits are an integral partner in the weight loss journey. However, they can only be beneficial when consumed at the right time. Whether you are trying to lose weight or you are consuming to get nutrients, time is the key to ensuring benefits. We spoke to Ms Vedika Premani, Clinical dietician, at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai shared about the time for fruit consumption that aids in weight loss.
Importance Of Fruits
Ms Vedika said, “Fruits are a powerhouse of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants, making them a vital part of any balanced diet.” The high fibre content in fruits helps curb cravings, enhances satiety, and prevents overeating which is a key factor in effective weight management, she added.
What’s The Right Time To Eat Fruits For Weight Loss?
Ms Vedika highlighted that the best time to eat fruits depends on personal routines and preferences. However, incorporating them as snacks or pre-meal appetisers is a simple yet effective way to support weight loss goals while enjoying their natural goodness instead of consuming them after a major meal since they add to the carbohydrate content of the meal.
Vedika mentioned that while there is no rule on when to eat fruits, they work exceptionally well as healthy snack options. She suggests consuming them as a mid-morning or mid-evening snack can keep energy levels stable and hunger pangs at bay while you are on your weight loss journey.
She recommends pairing fruits with a protein source like yoghurt or nuts can further enhance satiety and ensure a more gradual sugar release.

What Fruits To Consume For Weight Loss?
Vedica said for weight management it is preferable to consume fruits with high-fibre content like apples, pears, oranges, and berries. On the other hand, fruits like watermelon, bananas, mangoes, and chickoo have a higher glycemic index and should be consumed in moderation, especially by individuals looking to manage blood sugar levels.
She highlighted that choosing whole fruits over fruit juices is another smart strategy for weight management since whole fruits ensure that you consume more fibre, helping you to control hunger and avoid unnecessary added sugars found in many commercial juices.
