India is a land of rich and varied heritage and standing as testimonials to that heritage are the ancient forts. The forts have witnessed battles, lives, deaths, and have the history of our country imprinted within the walls. This is why today, we are here to tell you some of the most remarkable forts in our country that you definitely must visit at least once.

The Mehrangarh Fort

Located in the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, the Mehrangarh Fort is an epitome of a heritage of over  500 years old. The Fort was founded by Rao Jodha and stands at least 400 ft above the ground. The fort has seven entrances, each was built to commemorate the victory of the kings that ruled this fort. One of the gates is named Jayapol and it is said to be built by Maharaja Man Singh. 

The fort house the famous Moti mahal, the sheesh mahal, and both of which are fine examples of the exquisite architecture of ancient India. Apart from that, this fort also houses the Chamunda Devi temple and a museum which also happens to be one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. The fort is a must-visit destination and the city of Jodhpur, where the fort is built, is also the perfect backpacker’s paradise. 

The Gwalior Fort

Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar, the Gwalior Fort is located in the heart of India, the state of Madhya Pradesh. This intricately designed fort is a remarkable specimen of India’s heritage and classic architecture. From the Saas-Bahu temple to the Gujari Mahal (now a museum) to The Man Mandir. This fort has it all. Further, it is one of the largest forts ever built in India and is very important to our history. A postage stamp was also issued to remember this fort. Madhya Pradesh is one of the most beautiful states in our country and the Gwalior fort stands as the pride of this mesmerising state.

The Golconda Fort

The Golconda fort is situated in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. It was built by the Kakatiya kings. This large piece of the monument is testimony to the greatest periods of the rich history of our country and is known for its majestic and regal structure. Golkonda was initially known for its diamond mines located in the southeast in the Kollur Mine near the Kollur lake. The fort is known for its magnificent military-style architecture and is also one of the seven wonders of Hyderabad.

The Jaisalmer Fort

Built by Rawal Jaisal this is one of the largest forts in the world, the Jaisalmer fort is built amidst the great Thar Desert, the fort is also known as the Sonar Quila or the “Golden Fort and is situated on a   triangular Trikuta hill, which is 76 meters above the town. Jaisalmer Fort is the second most invincible fort in Rajasthan and inside it are Jain temples, royal palace, big gates, etc. Therefore, in order to visit the Trikuta Hill, majestic Havelis, palaces, and lakes, make sure to come to this fort at least once in a lifetime.
