Navratri is starting from the coming Saturday and after a year like 2020, it is mandatory to celebrate every festival with even more joy and laughter. Most of us celebrate Navratri by fasting and worshipping goddess Durga. The excitement for Diwali starts building from Navratra only and that is why we want all your festivals to bring umpteen prosperity and lights of happiness right from day 1 of the festivities.

Sookhe Aloo

This is one of the most popular recipes during fasts in India, as it is super easy and delicious that you don’t feel like you’re fasting. 

Ingredients

  • 1 kg potatoes/ aloo, boiled and peeled
  • ½ cup oil
  • 2 Tbsp finely sliced ginger
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida/ heeng
  • 4-6 whole red chilli
  • 4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 Tbsp coriander seeds, roasted and powdered
  • 2 black cardamom, roasted and powdered
  • 8 cloves, roasted and powdered
  • 2 tsp fennel seeds, roasted and powdered
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 tsp mango powder
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves

Method

  • Crush the potatoes with your palms and keep them aside.
  • Then add oil to a pan, along with heeng, chillies and sliced ginger.
  • Roast all the other ingredients and add them to the pan, along with the mashed potatoes, once the chillies start turning dark brown.
  • Add salt, turmeric, coriander leaves and mango powder, let it saute for a while.
  • Finally, put off the gas and garnish with coriander leaves and eat hot.

Dahi Gujhiya

Dahi Gujhiya is another very interesting dish that you can munch on while fasting. This is also eaten during Holi and is favourite among all age groups. To make Dahi Gujhiya easily check out the methods.

Ingredients

  • 100 Gram Urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 20 Raisin
  • 1/2 tbsp Almond silver
  • 15 Cashew nuts, chopped
  • 2 tbsp Khoya, grated
  • 2 tbsp Oil (to fry)
  • 2 cups Curd
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup Green chutney
  • ½ cup Sweet chutney
  • ½ tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin (crushed), braised
  • 1 tsp Chaat masala

Methods

  • First of all, mix the overnight soaked dal in a mixer, making a thick paste out of it.
  • Fluff up the dal using your hands. This will help in making the perfect gujhiyas.
  • Mix all the dry fruits together, the raisins, cashews, almonds, along with khoya.
  • Now, gently place a disc made out of dal mixture and place it over a slightly wet cloth on a flat surface.
  • Using the cloth, fold the disc into half and fry in the pan.
  • Now, whisk the curd and add salt to taste.
  • Prepare a deep water-container and add salt to it. After the gujhiyas are fried properly, soak them in water for about 15-20 minutes each. 
  • Finally, dip each gujhiya in the curd and enjoy with reg and green chutney.

Sabudana Thali Peeth

This is a very yummy dish to eat during fasting(water fasting). Sabudana white pearls add a very exotic taste to the flat discs and the spices make it so much better. Here’s the recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cup sabudana
  • 1/2 cup peanut
  • 4 potato, boiled & mashed
  • 4 chilli, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp cumin / jeera
  • 2 tsp pepper, crushed
  • 2 inch ginger, grated 
  • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup singhare ka atta / chestnut flour
  • Oil 

Methods

  • Rinse Sabudana and transfer to a large bowl, let it soak in around 2 cups of water for at least 4 hours.
  • Dry roast the peanuts and peel off the skin, and then crush them coarsely. 
  • In a pan, add soaked sabudana, potatoes, chilli, cumin, pepper, ginger, coriander, lemon juice and salt to taste.
  • Now add chestnut flour and knead a dough out of it.
  • Finally grease abutter paper and flatten the dough into medium-sized discs. Cook over a flat tawa and then peel the butter paper to cook the other side as well.
