Don't Know Your Hair Type? This Guide Will Help You

Determine your hair type at home by following this quick step by step guide.
how to check your hair type at home

Wondering why none of the expensive hair products you invest in work well for your tresses? Well, one reason can be not choosing hair care products as per your hair type. Surprisingly, many women don't know their hair type.

There are different factors that can help one analyse their actual hair type. One of the biggest benefits of knowing what your hair type is is that you end up choosing the right hair care products.

Here is a quick guide that will help you determine your hair type.

Step 1: Check Your Hair Density

hair density

Stand in front of a mirror with your hair parted in the middle. Take one section of your hair from any of the sides and hold it up by your hand. Now try to estimate your hair density. How?

Hair density is the amount of hair which are covering your head. When you move that section of your hair, do you see a lot of scalp? If that's the case, you have thin hair density. On the other hand, if you don't see much scalp at all, you have thick hair. Those with medium hair density will be able to see some scalp when they move their hair.

Step 2: Determine Your Hair Texture

After checking the density of your hair, it is important to determine the texture of your hair.

1. Wash your hair with regular shampoo and conditioner.

2. Make sure you don't go for an activity after washing your hair which makes your scalp sweaty.

3. Next, dry your hair naturally or using a towel.

4. On a plain white sheet of paper, place a piece of regular thread.

5. Place your hair strand parallel to it to check your hair texture.

6. If your hair strand is thicker than the thread, you have thick hair. If the hair strand is thinner then you have thin hair and if your hair is almost as thick as the thread, you have a medium hair texture.

Step 3: Understand Your Scalp

Your scalp too will help you understand your hair type. One of the best ways to check what is your scalp type is by washing your hair at night. Let your hair naturally dry and then go to sleep. When you wake up, do a patch test of your scalp. Press a tissue on your scalp, especially on the crown of your hair and check if the tissue has deposited any oil.

Normal Hair

If you see very little oil on the tissue, you have normal hair.

Dry Hair

When there is no oil deposited on the tissue, it means that your scalp is dry.

Oily Hair

If you see a big oily patch on the tissue, it means you have an oily scalp.

Combination Hair

Do you see the oil only on specific regions of the tissues, you have combination hair.

Step 4: Check Your Hair Pattern

Next, it is important to know what is your hair pattern. Most commonly, there are 3 types of hair patterns - straight, curly, and wavy.

Straight Hair

If your hair lies flat from the roots to the tips, you have straight hair. Another trick to check if you have straight hair is by curling one section of your hair. If they don't hold any amount of curling then they are straight hair.

Wavy Hair

Wavy hair isn't curly or straight, the texture is between these two hair patterns. Most women with curly hair will notice a little curl at the end of their hair. The texture too is rough as compared to regular hair.

Curly Hair

Hold a single strand of your hair and check if it has an 'S' pattern. If yes, you have curly hair. The curl remains even if you try to hold it straight. These hair get tangled quickly and are more prone to frizziness.

Hair Care For All Hair Types

While you might find hair care products for all hair types in the market, there are some basic tips everyone should follow irrespective of their hair type.

Use A Mild Shampoo

Instead of using harsh shampoos which take away the natural oils of your hair and make your tresses dry and lifeless, use a mild shampoo. Mild shampoos are gentle on your hair and do not dry out your hair, they keep the moisture locked in.

Limit The Use Of Heat Styling Products

Using heat styling products like a curling rod or a straightener on a regular basis can damage your hair in the long run. This can lead to issues like hair thinning, hair fall and hair breakage. When using a heat styling product, make sure you use a heat protectant spray.

Oil Your Hair Regularly

Oiling is essential to stimulate new hair growth. Take any oil of your choice and gently massage your scalp. This will also prevent hair damage.

Knowing your hair type will help you choose the right hair care products and routine for you which will further help you treat a lot of your common hair problems. For more such beauty-related stories, stay tuned!
