The Ambience

Garvi Gujarat Bhavan is the official guest house of the Gujarat state in Delhi and has its own canteen. So, you will have to visit the Gujarat Bhavan at Akbar Road, Delhi to visit the restaurant. The ambience is quite simple and features minimal decor. The place has regular table seating. The highlight of the restaurant is the 'Aao Thali Bajao' corner where the visitors can ring the plate if they had a good time.

My Experience

As soon as I sat down for the meal, an executive came up to ask if the team should start serving the thali. A huge thali was placed on the table with multiple bowls. For drinks, I got a glass of salted chhaas. Following the drink, condiments like sweet and mint chutney, salad, and pickle were served along with two snacks like - khandvi and mini samosa.

Quickly, all the bowls in my thali were filled with Gujarati dishes — kadhi, tikhi daal, aloo matar, dahi vada among others. For choice of bread, there were two options — chapati with or without ghee and bajra roti. I also got to choose between sweet and savoury rice. For sweets, there was wheat jaggery and fennel barfi, and gulab jamun on the day's menu.

For anyone who hasn't explored Gujarati cuisine before, let me tell you that you need to get ready to experience a burst of flavours. The food is rich in its traditional taste. There were moments when I felt like I was in Gujarat, relishing food at a local eatery. Be it the kadhi or the dal, every dish served at the canteen oozed home-like goodness. Hot phulkas were served with a choice of ghee and that too made me feel like being in the comfort of my home.

Honestly, I was full by the time I finished everything but there was still room for dessert. For sweets, I enjoyed a hot gulab jamun and an unusual barfi prepared using wheat flour, fennel seeds, and jaggery. On speaking with the chef, I got to know that it was a Gujarati specialty known as gol papdi.
