This World Cancer Day 2025, it's time to separate fact from fiction and shed light on the truth about cancer. In this article, we'll debunk common myths with insights from our expert, DrJeyhan BDhabhar, a Cancer physician and expert at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre.

myths and facts about cancer disease

Dr Dhabhar said, "Cancer, often shrouded in fear and misconceptions, is one of the most misunderstood diseases. While advancements in science and medicine have significantly improved diagnosis and treatment, many myths persist, creating unnecessary anxiety and delaying early detection. Dispelling these myths is critical to promoting awareness and ensuring timely care."

Myth 1: Cancer Is Always Fatal

The expert shared, "Fact: Thanks to early detection and advanced treatments, many cancers are now curable or manageable. For example, cancers like breast, prostate, and cervical cancers have high survival rates if detected early. Regular screenings and prompt medical attention can make a significant difference."

Myth 2: Only Smokers Get Cancer

"Fact: While smoking is a leading cause of cancers like lung and oral cancers, other factors like genetics, diet, infections, and environmental exposure also contribute. For instance, HPV is a leading cause of cervical cancer, and poor dietary habits can increase the risk of colorectal cancer," shared the doctor.

Myth 3: Cancer Is Contagious

Dr Jeyhan mentioned, "Fact: Cancer cannot spread from one person to another. However, certain viruses like HPV or hepatitis B, which are transmissible, can increase cancer risk. Vaccination and preventive measures can mitigate these risks."

Myth 4: Cancer Treatments Are Worse Than the Disease

"Fact: Modern treatments, including targeted therapies and immunotherapies, have fewer side effects and significantly improve quality of life. While side effects exist, they are manageable with proper medical care, chemotherapy given by an expert and in the correct way is very well tolerated," Dr Dhabhar pointed out.

Myth 5: A Positive Attitude And Alternative Medicine Alone Can Cure Cancer

The doctor states, "Fact: While mental health and a positive attitude help cope with treatment, cancer requires medical intervention. Ignoring symptoms or relying solely on alternative remedies can delay necessary care.

Myth 6: Cancer Is Only A Genetic Disease

"10% of breast, ovarian, and colon can be hereditary, the remaining 90% are not genetic!" said Dr Jeyhan.

Breaking the Barriers Through Awareness!

"Raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options is key to reducing its impact. Regular screenings, healthy lifestyle choices, and vaccinations (e.g., HPV and hepatitis B) are powerful tools for prevention. Public education can help demystify cancer, encourage open discussions, and reduce stigma," concluded the expert.
