A menstrautor’s health has always been one of the least addressed topics in this world. Even the ones that have been discussed always come with myths and misinformation attached to them.

One such subject is toxic shock syndrome (TSS). It is a life-threatening complication that many menstruators don’t even know about. This article discusses how it happens, how it can be prevented and if there is any cure.

What Is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?

what is toxic shock syndrome

TSS is among bacterial infections that can have a devastating effect on a woman’s health. It is a result of toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can also be caused by streptococcus (staph) bacteria.

Dr Suman Lal, Associate Director - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Max Hospital, Gurugram, told us, “Bacteria strain releases the toxin into the bloodstream which spreads through the body.”

Symptoms Of TSS

TSS often presents with symptoms like

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Rashes
  • Muscle Pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Multi-organ failure in case the patient goes into the shock

What Causes TSS And Who Suffers From It?

causes of toxic shock syndrome

In general, TSS is often seen among menstruators who use tampons. When a person uses the menstrual product, the bacteria strain can grow on it and get trapped into the linings of the cervix and enter the uterus.

A tampon can become a breeding ground for the bacteria if it is not changed frequently. According to Cleveland Clinic, the strain can also grow if a person uses a highly absorbent tampon on days when the blood flow is light.

Therefore, doctors advise to not leave a tampon inside for far too long. Anything that stays inside your body longer than the prescribed time can result in toxic shock syndrome. This also includes sponges, cervical caps, diaphragms, menstrual cups or other period products. It is less common with sanitary pads but can happen.

Prevention & Treatment Of TSS

Dr Lal suggests menstruators be wary of the products they are using and ensure period hygiene without failing. This is the only way in which people can prevent it from happening.

Mayo Clinic study also suggests menstruators use tampons with lower absorbency and change them frequently between four to eight hours. One can also switch between various menstrual products through the cycle and use panty liners for light-flow days.

The downside of TSS is it can deteriorate quickly and can be fatal for the patient. Therefore, one has to be wary of the symptoms and consult a doctor as soon as possible. If treated promptly, it can be cured.
