Frozen food may be convenient, but it could take a toll on your health in many unexpected ways. A recent study by researchers at the IRCCS Neuromed Mediterranean Neurological Institute links frozen and ultra-processed foods to faster ageing. We spoke to Riya Desai, a senior dietitian at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai, who shared her insights on this phenomenon and explained how such foods might impact your health, from your skin to your gut.
What Is The Correlation Between Ultra-Processed Food And Aging Faster?
Ultra-processed foods, including many frozen options, are loaded with additives, sugars, and unhealthy fats. According to Desai, “These ingredients can increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, leading to cellular damage and accelerated signs of ageing.”
One key aspect of ageing involves telomeres—protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Naturally, these telomeres shorten as we age, but consuming ultra-processed foods has been linked to faster telomere shortening. “Shorter telomeres are associated with premature ageing and an increased risk of age-related diseases,” Desai explains.
Additionally, the gut microbiome—a critical player in overall health—suffers from ultra-processed foods. Desai highlights how these foods “promote the growth of harmful bacteria while reducing beneficial microbes,” disrupting metabolism, immune function, and even brain health.
Another culprit is the presence of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), compounds that form when proteins or fats combine with sugar. High levels of AGEs can damage skin, leading to wrinkles and fine lines. “If you want to avoid premature ageing signs, steer clear of ultra-processed foods like burgers, French fries, and smilies,” Desai advises.

How Else Is Frozen Food Harmful To Us?
Frozen food’s impact goes beyond ageing. The type of frozen food, preparation method, and consumption frequency all play a role. Many frozen items are packed with sodium, preservatives, MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate), and unhealthy fats to enhance the flavour. Desai warns that consuming these regularly “can take a heavy toll on physical health,” leading to conditions like highblood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and weight gain.
Additionally, processed frozen meals are often low in fibre and protein but high in calories, making them less filling and potentially contributing to overeating. Improper storage or refreezing can further cause bacterial growth, leading to illnesses caused by pathogens like Listeria and Salmonella.

Desai also points out that frequently falling sick due to such foods can harm mental health, leading to “feelings of frustration, sadness, and irritation.”
Should We Avoid All Frozen Food?
Not all frozen foods are bad. Desai clarifies, “It’s a common misconception that all frozen foods are harmful. Frozen vegetables and fruits without added preservatives can be just as nutritious as fresh ones.”
Flash-freezing, a technique where vegetables and fruits are frozen immediately after harvest, helps preserve their nutrients. However, it’s crucial to choose plain options without added sauces, butter, or seasonings. For example, frozen fruits are ideal for smoothies or snacks as long as they don’t contain added sugars or syrups.
“Always read the labels to make informed choices,” Desai advises. Opt for frozen products labelled ‘100% fruit’ or those free of preservatives and additives to get the best nutritional value.
While frozen and ultra-processed foods offer convenience, their long-term impact on health and ageing cannot be ignored. Reducing your intake of ultra-processed options and focusing on whole, minimally processed foods can go a long way in maintaining your health and vitality.
