If you’re thinking about trying for a baby, it helps to start with a health check – not just for peace of mind, but also to make sure your body is ready. Many couples assume they only need testsafterthey’ve struggled to conceive, but in reality, a few simple investigations early on can make the journey smoother. The first thing doctors usually do is take a generalphysical exam. This covers basics like blood pressure, pulse, weight, and blood sugar. It might seem routine, but issues like high sugar or thyroid problems can affect fertility more than we realise.

6 Essential Pre-Pregnancy Tests and Health Guide
1) Pelvic Exam
Apelvic examis sometimes advised too. It’s optional, but in many cases, it helps the doctor get a better sense of your reproductive health.
2) Ultrasound
One of the most useful tests is atransvaginal ultrasound (TVS). This allows the doctor to look at your uterus and ovaries in detail. It can show how many follicles you have, called theantral follicle count (AFC), and show anything unusual like cysts or fibroids.
3) Blood Tests, Like:
- AMH, which gives an idea of your egg reserve
- Thyroid and prolactin levels, which play a big role in regulating your cycle
- Blood sugarto check for early signs of diabetes
- A generalCBC, and aurine test, to rule out infections
- Viral screeningfor things like HIV and hepatitis
- Blood groupand a test calledelectrophoresis(HPLC), which checks for inherited conditions like thalassemia
4) Tube Check
Another important one is thetubal patency test. This checks whether your fallopian tubes are open. Even if ovulation is happening, a blocked tube can prevent fertilisation.
5) Semen Analysis
For men, asemen analysisis just as important. It tells us how many sperm are present, how well they move, and whether they are healthy.
6) Genetic Testing
In some situations like repeated miscarriages or early menopause, the doctor might suggestgenetic testingof the embryos as well.
You may not need to undertake every test but that’s why it’s imperative that you take a proactive consultation with a fertility specialist to understand your reproductive health and gauge your options. The goal is simple: to give yourself the best possible chance before you even start trying.
