Dr Sehgal said, “As the world increasingly faces the challenges of emerging health threats, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has become a significant concern. Known primarily for causing respiratory illnesses, HMPV is now being linked to broader health impacts, including complications affecting vision. While its primary symptoms are respiratory, cases of eye-related complications during or after an HMPV infection have highlighted the urgent need for integrated public health strategies to address the risk of blindness.”

Overlooked Impact On Vision

“HMPV primarily affects children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Its common symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, often mistaken for other respiratory illnesses. However, in some cases, the infection can lead to eye issues such as redness, pain, blurred vision, or increased sensitivity to light. If not treated promptly, these symptoms can escalate to more severe conditions like conjunctivitis, keratitis, or optic nerve inflammation, resulting in long-term vision loss,” shared Dr Sehgal.

He added, “The risk is particularly high for individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or those on long-term medication. Children and the elderly are also vulnerable, making it imperative to identify these complications early and take corrective action.”

“Timely detection of ocular complications during HMPV infections is critical. Routine eye screenings during outbreaks can help identify at-risk individuals and provide timely interventions to prevent long-term damage,” mentioned Dr Vineet.

He further explained, “Healthcare providers must be equipped to recognise the potential link between HMPV and eye conditions. Incorporating ophthalmic assessments into primary care during outbreaks can play a vital role in mitigating the risks of vision impairment.”

Preventive Measures Are Key

Dr Vineet shared, “Since there is no specific vaccine for HMPV, prevention remains the most effective strategy. Measures such as wearing masks, regular handwashing, and maintaining physical distance can help reduce the spread of the virus. Ensuring proper hygiene in schools, workplaces, and public spaces is critical in protecting vulnerable populations.”

“Encouraging vaccination for other respiratory illnesses like influenza and pneumococcus can also indirectly reduce the overall burden on healthcare systems, allowing more resources to be directed toward addressing HMPV-related complications,” he continued.

"To address the risk of blindness, access to specialised eye care and antiviral therapies must be strengthened. Dr Sehgal also mentioned, "Telemedicine platforms can bridge the gap by connecting patients with eye care specialists in real-time, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment. Public-private partnerships can further enhance the reach of these services, ensuring that even the most remote communities are covered."

“Public awareness campaigns are essential to mitigate the risks associated with HMPV. Community outreach programs, social media platforms, and local health workers can play a crucial role in educating people about the symptoms of HMPV, including its potential impact on vision. Schools and community centres can serve as hubs for these campaigns, particularly to reach high-risk groups such as children and the elderly.
