Dr Singh agrees, stating, "Yes, sexual health and having sex can positively impact physical health. Regular sexual activity has been linked to improved cardiovascular health. The increased heart rate and circulation during sex offers a mild cardiovascular workout, which may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease."

She further explained, "Additionally, sexual activity triggers the release of hormones like oxytocin and endorphins, which enhance the immune system by reducing stress and inflammation. These hormones promote overall health, strengthening the body's natural defences and improving mood, which can, in turn, support physical recovery and well-being."

Research studies published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) have affirmed the physical health benefits of regular sexual activity. For instance, a Welsh longitudinal study involving 914 men aged 45-59, conducted between 1979-1983, revealed that men with more frequent sexual intercourse had a lower risk of experiencing ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease events over a 20-year follow-up.

Another study from the same dataset found that men who experienced more orgasms had a reduced risk of dying from coronary heart disease. Clinical studies also support these findings, showing that increased frequency of intercourse is linked to better mental health outcomes, healthier heart rate variability, and a lower risk of mortality.

She explained, "One common myth is that sexual health is solely about intercourse, but in reality, it also encompasses emotional, psychological, and physical well-being, including communication and intimacy. Another misconception is that sexual desire and activity inevitably decline with age.”

She further told us, “Many individuals remain sexually active and satisfied well into their later years. Additionally, there's a belief that sexual problems always signal a relationship issue, but often they can be caused by factors such as stress, health conditions, or medications. It's also crucial to emphasise that safe sex practices are key to maintaining both sexual and overall health."
