Yoga, as a practice, has existed for ages. It has a host of benefits, which we are mostly aware of. But in this article, we are going to deal with a different aspect of yoga, which is whether the ancient practice has any role in ensuring the fertility of a person. Because nowadays, let's admit, most couples struggle to conceive, thanks to their speedy lifestyles and erratic schedules. And, this is where yoga helps, says Dr Nishi Singh, Head of Fertility, Prime IVF. Yoga has been known to bring about calm and energy in a person, which acts as a catalyst in boosting their reproductive health. Here's more.
4 Ways Yoga Can Boost Your Fertility
As per Dr Singh, yoga can aid in "enhancing fertility through releasing tension, balancing endocrine function, and allowing overall well-being." She, however, adds that yoga is not a cure for infertility, but studies have proven that if one does the poses, it leads to a healthier and more balanced situation to conceive. Here are 4 ways yoga is helpful for improving fertility:
1) Reduces Stress
Stress disrupts ovulation and sperm production in women and men, respectively. When we are in distress, our body releases cortisol, which harms the reproductive system. With the help of yoga and using breath work, meditation, and gentle movement in the body and mind, we feel relaxed. It lowers your stress levels and encourages relaxation that can help your body become ready for pregnancy.
2) Supports Hormonal Balance
PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), thyroid, and irregular periods caused by hormonal imbalances can become problems for conception. Yoga in general improves the circulation of blood, normalises the insulin level, and maintains a person's general hormonal equilibrium. Reclining Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana) and Legs-Up-The-Wall (Viparita Karani) inversions, specifically, are beneficial in supplying blood to the reproductive organs.

3) Assists Men's Reproductive Health
Yoga is also found to be useful for men's reproductive health. Stress, vascular disease, and inflammation harm sperm quality as well as impact testosterone levels in a bad way. Therapeutic yoga boosts pelvic blood flow, reduces oxidative stress, and normalises hormones, and all these help create healthier sperm. Yoga also aids in emotional well-being, so men cope better when they are psychologically down, resulting from infertility problems. To have better results, do yoga together. Practising the asanas with your partner strengthens emotional connection, makes communication better, and helps you become one another's support system. This undeniably is an important factor influencing romantic bonds.
4) Promotes Healthy Lifestyle
Yoga promotes lifestyle practices such as good sleep of 8 hours, healthy eating, and avoiding harmful chemicals. These combined enhance reproductive health as your body feels gentle. Moreover, these practices are safe and simple to do.
"In short, yoga is definitely not fertility therapy. However, it can be a natural and effective way to prepare your body and mind for fertility. Yoga not only encourages relaxation and maintains hormones, but it also allows for well-being. However, as always, please consult your doctor before taking up any new activity, particularly where fertility is concerned," wraps up Dr Nishi Singh, Head of Fertility, Prime IVF.
