1. Puffy Eyes That Don’t Go Away
Waking up with puffy eyes is common, but if the swelling sticks around even after a good night’s sleep, it could be a sign of protein leaking through the urine, a symptom of kidney damage. This is known as proteinuria and should be taken seriously.
2. Blurry or Double Vision
If your vision suddenly becomes blurry, your kidneys might be involved. High blood pressure and diabetes, both of which are linked to kidney problems, can also affect the small blood vessels in the eyes, causing vision changes or even sudden loss of vision.
3. Dry or Itchy Eyes
People with kidney disease, especially those on dialysis often deal with dry, itchy eyes. This can happen due to an imbalance of minerals and waste in the body. If your eyes constantly feel irritated or gritty, get it checked.

4. Red or Bloodshot Eyes
Bloodshot eyes can be a warning sign of high blood pressure or poorly managed diabetes, which are major causes of kidney disease. In rare cases, kidney conditions like lupus nephritis can also affect the eyes.
5. Trouble Seeing Colours
Some people with kidney problems may find it harder to tell certain colours apart, especially blues and yellows. This might be due to optic nerve damage or changes in the retina caused by long-term illness.
When Should You Worry?
While occasional eye issues are common and often harmless, if the symptoms don’t go away or get worse, it’s best to get both your eyes and kidneys checked. Eye exams can often catch early signs of health issues, including problems with your kidneys.
