Brain Aneurysm: What It Is, Why It Occurs, and the Early Warning Signs to Watch For
What Is Brain Aneurysm?
Dr Pathak explained that a brain aneurysm or cerebral aneurysm isa ballooning or bulge in a blood vessel within the brain. Sometimes likened to a 'ticking time bomb,'it may not cause anysymptoms for years, however, ifit bursts, can produce life-threatening complications like a hemorrhagic stroke, brain damage, or even death.
Why DoBrain Aneurysms Happen? Who Is At High Risk?
"Aneurysms generally develop at weak spots in the walls of arteries, usually where the arteries branch," said Dr Sitla. He added that althoughthe precise reason is not always certain, various risk factors are involved in their causation. These include a history of high blood pressure, smoking, head trauma, drug abuse (cocaine being particularly implicated), inherited conditions involving blood vessels, and infection. Women and people aged over 40 years are also at a higher risk.
Warning Signs OfBrain Aneurysms
Most unruptured brain aneurysms don’t show any symptoms and are often discovered incidentally during brain scans for other reasons. Some, however, compress nerves or brain tissue and lead to symptoms such as:

A ruptured aneurysm typically manifests as a sudden, severe headache, often reported as the "worst headache of one's life",with nausea, stiff neck, photophobia, or loss of consciousness. It is a medical emergency and needs urgent intervention.
Role Of Preventive Detection
Preventive detection is life-saving. Brain imaging methods like MRI, CT scan, or cerebral angiography help identify aneurysms before they burst. "Lifestyle modification, medication for controlling blood pressure, and in some instances, surgical procedures like clipping or coiling may prevent complications," added Dr Pathak.
Understanding the early warning signs and acting promptly can make a crucial difference. If you or someone around you experiences a sudden and intense headache or other neurological symptoms, it is advisable toseek immediate medical help.
