5 Heart Attack Warning Signs Women Often Mistake For Menopause

Heart Attack Menopause Symptoms: While chest pain remains the most recognised sign of a heart attack, studies show that women are more likely to experience additional or less obvious symptoms similar to menopause.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in women, yet the signs of a heart attack are often misread or ignored, especially because they can resemble symptoms of menopause. This overlap can lead many women to overlook warning signs of deteriorating heart health.

To understand how to distinguish between the two, we spoke to Dr Asha Rani.V, Assistant Professor at SDM College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan, who explained why this confusion occurs and what women should watch out for.

Are Menopause Symptoms the Same As Heart Attack Symptoms?

The hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause and menopause, typically between ages 45–55, can cause a range of symptoms, some of which are also seen in heart attacks. Dr Rani explains that oestrogen, a hormone that protects the heart by regulating cholesterol and supporting healthy blood vessels, begins to decline during this phase.

“Oestrogen naturally helps in reducing the buildup of fat in arteries and keeps blood vessels healthy. When oestrogen levels drop, it can lead to increased cholesterol, blood pressure, and even weight gain, all risk factors for heart disease,” she said.

According to Dr Rani, both menopause and heart attacks can cause discomfort in the chest, fatigue, and even nervousness. However, the context, intensity, and combination of symptoms matter.

Here are symptoms that are common to both and can cause confusion:

  • Chest discomfort or tightness
  • Sudden fatigue
  • Palpitations
  • Night sweats or hot flashes
  • Mild breathlessness
  • Nausea or indigestion
  • General muscle or body aches
  • Feelings of anxiety or restlessness

Warning Signs That Point to a Heart Attack

While some symptoms overlap, certain signs are more specific to heart attacks and should never be ignored. Dr Rani urges women to be cautious if they experience any of the following:

  • Persistent chest pain or pressure, especially in the centre or left side
  • Pain radiating to the jaw, neck, back, or arms
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Palpitations that don’t settle
  • Sweating without physical activity
  • Nausea or vomiting that feels abnormal

“If any of these symptoms last longer than a few minutes or keep returning, immediate medical attention is critical,” Dr Rani warns.

Can Menopause Cause a Heart Attack?

While menopause itself isn’t the cause of heart attacks, it marks a transition period when women become more vulnerable to heart-related conditions. The loss of hormonal protection, coupled with lifestyle factors, increases the risk for coronary artery disease and stroke.

Dr Rani also notes, “Menopause should be a wake-up call, not just for reproductive health, but also cardiovascular health. It’s the right time to reassess lifestyle choices and make heart-healthy decisions.”
