Make The Waist Bigger Of Your Jeans

Do you feel like your jeans squeeze you in half every time you button them? Whether you’ve put on some weight or the fabric of your jeans shrunk, try this easy sewing hack to adjust the waistband size and save your favorite jeans!

The easiest technique of solving this issue is to insert a V of extra fabric or elastic at the side seams of your jeans. Do remember, though this is a simple and easy hack, but it does leave exposed stitching and an obvious triangle of added fabric. However, you can use your creative brains to style this look!

  • First, remove the belt loops from the side seams of your jeans.
  • Then, pick out the side seam using a seam ripper and open it up to just a couple of inches below the waist followed by pulling the seams open to create a ‘V’ shape.
  • After that, find a piece of fabric that matches your jeans as closely as possible. Or you can experiment with this step by using another pattern of the fabric.
  • Cut out a piece of the fabric and fold it in half so that it forms a rectangle.
  • Stitch around the edge of the rectangle in a zigzag pattern.
  • Then, place the rectangle fabric inside the open V of the side seam.
  • Again, zigzag stitch over the open edge of the side seam.
  • Check and see as the new fabric should now be sealed inside, filling in the open V.
  • You’ll get a perfect fit now.

Are your jeans too long? We short women sometimes deal with this issue as those long jeans may bunch up in the middle to create a messy appearance, or they may drag on the ground, who would like that? But instead of throwing out your lovely jeans, why not try this easy sewing hack?

  • Start by cuffing the jeans to the desired length.
  • Place your needle next to the original hem of the jeans.
  • Then, sew across just below the jean’s edge and sew all the way around the cuff.
  • After that, turn the legs of the jeans right side out.
  • Just keep this point in mind that if you have hemmed more than 4-5 inches, you can just cut off the excess portion so that it doesn’t look bulky. However, that method comes with its own cost as the jeans may fray when washed.
  • Once you flip the jeans back, give them a good iron to smooth them out.

But don’t worry, instead of buying another pair or having to use a special tool to attach a new button, try this hack first.

  • Take a small coin, a circular swatch of denim fabric, a needle, and a thread.
  • Then, sew the coin inside of the denim material.
  • After that, sew that to your jeans where the button used to be.

Fix Those Crotch Holes

The crotch of your old jeans is subject to all kinds of wear and tear. It is also the place most likely to get rips and tears due to various reasons.

If you are dealing with the same issue, don’t throw your jeans away. Rather, you can fix it very easily and with nothing more than a needle and thread!

  • Begin by cutting loose threads or frayed edges away from the damaged area. This will prevent the hole from getting any worse. Also, be careful and just cut frayed threads, not the actual fabric of the jeans.
  • Once fixed, use the needle and thread to mend the rest of the hole, making sure to sew vertically.
  • Thread the needle and tie the knot properly. This technique will anchor the thread in the fabric once you start sewing.
  • Then, sew over the edges of the damaged area by looping thread around them and tying them shut. This will also prevent further damage.
  • After that, hold the fabric so that the hole in your jeans is nearly or completely shut.
  • Then, sew vertically across the damage to close it. As you complete till the far side of the hole, start making the stitches smaller.
  • Lastly, pull the thread tight. And after tying the thread, trim it so there are no loose ends.
