Anything first remains always and this applies to a newborn’s first bath, too. Even though the baby hardly understands anything probably, it’s a nice bonding experience between the parent and the newborn. Despite being a significant milestone for new parents as it brings joy, bathing a newborn might also be an anxious moment for the parent. However, by following professional guidance, understanding the delicate nature of a newborn’s skin, and using products specifically made for infants, parents can transform bath time into a calming and memorable bonding experience, writes Dr Dilip Tripathi, Regional Head, Baby and Women’s Health Research and Development at Kenvue. He tells us more.

Baby’s First Bath: 5 Tips New Parents Can Follow

As per Dr Dilip Tripathi, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) recommended delaying the baby's first bath until they are medically stable, typically between 6 to 24 hours after birth. He suggests these steps to make the first bath of a newborn a comfortable experience for both:

Baby’s First

1) Prepare Well

Before starting your baby’s bath, make sure everything you need is within arm’s reach. This includes:

  • Gentle baby cleanser
  • Soft washcloth
  • Baby towel
  • Appropriate moisturizers based on baby’s skin type
  • Clean diaper
  • Fresh clothes
  • Lukewarm bathwater (test it using your elbow to ensure it’s the right temperature)
  • Maintain a warm room environment to prevent your baby from feeling cold

2) During Bath Dos

During bath time, engage in conversation with your baby, as this not only enhances bonding but also supports their emotional and cognitive development. Speaking to your baby helps them recognize language patterns and promotes early language skills. Additionally, playing soft, soothing music can create a calming atmosphere, further enhancing your baby’s bath experience while fostering a sense of security.

3) Bathing Techniques

Once your baby’s umbilical cord has fallen off, swaddled immersion bathing can be introduced as part of their regular hygiene routine.

  • Always support your baby’s head and neck, cradle the head with one hand while washing and rinsing with the other.
  • Start cleaning from the face (the cleanest area) and move downward.
  • According to IAP recommendations, a daily bath with lukewarm water, not exceeding 15 minutes, is advisable except in colder climates or winter months, when bathing two to three times per week is sufficient.
  • Never leave your baby unattended during the bath.

4) Choose Baby Skin-Specific Cleansers

Opt for a mild top to toe cleanser, specially formulated for a newborn’s delicate skin. Look for science backed products with large micelles that don’t penetrate or irritate the baby’s skin while effectively removing dirt and impurities without damaging the skin barrier. The cleanser should be pH balanced and free from harmful chemicals such as parabens, sulphates, dyes, and phthalates.

When it comes to hair care, use a gentle, pH-balanced baby shampoo that is tear-free and non-irritating. Washing the baby’s hair once or twice a week—or when visibly soiled—is usually enough.

5) Post-Bath Care

  • Carefully lift your baby out of the tub, supporting their head and neck, and place them on a clean, dry towel.
  • Gently pat dry, paying close attention to folds and creases in the skin.
  • Use a soft, warm towel to dry the baby thoroughly from head to toe.
  • After the bath, it is recommended to apply a light, non-greasy, fast-absorbing baby moisturizer to help lock in moisture and protect against dryness or irritation.
  • Moisturizers with natural ingredients like coconut oil are ideal due to their nourishing properties.

Newborn's First Bath: Further Safety Tips

Keep baths short—ideally between 5–10 minutes—to prevent chills and protect the baby’s delicate skin. Prolonged exposure to water can disrupt the skin's natural moisture barrier, leading to transepidermal water loss and potential irritation.

Bathing two to three times a week is generally enough for newborns, unless additional cleaning is necessary, to avoid drying out their skin.

"By following these steps and choosing products that are safe and gentle for babies, bath time can become a secure, soothing, and bonding experience. Always prioritize gentle care and cater to your baby’s specific skin needs," wraps upDr Dilip Tripathi.
