In today’s day and age, where the living is urban and lifestyle modern, women experiencing hormonal imbalances is nothing new. Coupled with stress, fatigue, and brain fog, their menstrual cycles go for a toss. However, since everything is connected to the human body, an unhealthy menstrual cycle significantly contributes to your overall health going south. In this article, Vaidya Smita Naram, co-founder of Ayushakti Ayurveda, writes about how to manage daily pressures and maintain good menstrual health.
7 Easy Tips for Smooth Menstrual Cycle
According to Vaidya Smita Naram, not just adults, but even teenagers nowadays face hormonal issues like heavy flow with clots, irregular cycles, hormonal acne, and extreme mood swings.
“These symptoms are not just problems but signals our body is giving that it needs attention,” she adds. She suggests 7 easy tips one can follow to have healthy periods:
1) Exercise Routine
A regular exercise routine is needed for weight management and overall well-being. Your daily exercise plan can be 1 hour comprising:
- 20 minutes of yoga or Pilates
- 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (running, cycling, swimming, dancing, aerobics)
- 10 minutes of weight training
Apart from this, pranayama or breathing exercises must be done daily as well. Those can be:
- Anulom Vilom (Alternate nostril breathing): 10 minutes
- Kapalbhati (Skull shining breathing): 10 minutes
Meanwhile, if you are into yoga, asanas or poses that work on the thighs, tummy, and buttocks should help, like:
- Utkatasan (Chair pose): 5 times
- Hastapadasan (Standing forward bend): 5 times
- Suryanamaskar (Sun salutation): 5 times (all 12 postures)
- Bhujangasan (Cobra pose): 5 times
- Naukasan (Boat pose): 5 times
- Salabhasan (Locust pose): 5 times
2) Drink Chamomile-Ginger Tea
Have a cup of freshly made chamomile tea in the morning. Mix 1 tsp dried chamomile flowers with 1 tsp grated fresh ginger root in 1 cup water.Sip slowly and enjoy every bit of it in the morning sun.
3) Ayurveda Herbal Infused Water
Have a cup of cinnamon-infused water. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory qualities that help reduce period-related headaches. Mix half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder in warm water and drink it twice a day.

4) Fennel Seeds Water
The natural anti-inflammatory qualities of fennel seeds will lessen nausea and indigestion. Soak 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds in hot water two times a day and drink the same after straining.
5) Parsley
Parsley, like cinnamon, has anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease period cramps. You can mix 1/4 cup of fresh parsley leaves in a cup of boiling water and have it twice a day.
6) Dietary Changes
Avoid foods like alcohol, caffeine, refined oil, dairy products, etc as these are trigger foods. Also, opt for healthier options of cooking oils, like olive oil or clarified butter (ghee). Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to calm the period pain.
7) Relaxing Therapies
To help subside the pain during your periods, go for heat therapy. You can place a heating pad or a hot water bottle on your lower abdomen. This will make the uterine muscles relax, reducing cramps. Soaking your feet in Epsom salt is another good option, as it also loosens the uterine muscles, reduces inflammation, and promotes relaxation.
One of the best ways to relax period pain is having an Ayurveda Abhyanga Massage. This full body massage with a special focus on your lower abdomen, thighs, and back, done with castor and mustard oil, has natural anti-inflammatory properties.
Slowly including these tweaks and modifications in your day-to-day routine will show long-term effects, resulting in better health. And then, managing your periods, achieving hormonal balance, and enjoying a more easy cycle would become the new normal for you.
