There are many things that may seem abnormal to the body and we are often left curious. With so many questions in mind, we normally hesitate to ask somebody. Talking to someone seems unapproachable at times, and many times, all of us struggle with it.
Like the hair on your nipple, have you ever wondered why you have one or two, or maybe more? Have you ever been able to ask somebody about it? All of us have questions and some of us have answers.
Nipple hair is a very common thing, in men and in women. It’s not something abnormal. Hairy nipples in women are more common than you think. The question is ‘why?’
The hormonal levels in the body are constantly on the move. Generally, at the age of 11, a girl starts to notice changes in her bodily appearance and emotions. With constant modifications, hair grows on the nipple area, scientifically termed as areola. Women generally have some nipple growth on the area surrounding the nipple due to hormonal changes in the body. It can also be due to pregnancy, menopause, or a transition period between the ages of 20 to 30. (Want To Know More About Post-Menopause?)
High Levels Of Androgens
Higher levels of androgens like testosterone can cause nipple hair growth, acne, changes in female body shape, decrease in breast size, increase in body hair in a male pattern (such as on the face, chin, and abdomen), lack of menstrual periods ( also known as amenorrhea) and oily skin. Androgens are a group of hormones that play a role in male characteristics and reproductive activity.
The imbalanced nature of hormones in the body results in PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which the ovaries produce an excessive amount of androgens, male sex hormones that are usually present in women in small amounts. PCOS, in some cases, results in excessive hair growth over the sides of the face, and the nipples. The hair growth on the entire body becomes abnormal.
When untreated, Cushing syndrome can result in exaggerated facial roundness, weight gain around the midsection and upper back, thinning of your arms and legs, easy bruising, and stretch marks. Cushing syndrome occurs when your body has too much of the hormone cortisol over time. With the syndrome, the hair on the body and the face becomes thicker or more visible. Thus, the hair on the nipple.
Hair is hair, and it’s beautiful, be it anywhere. Don’t be ashamed.
