People are supposed to choose their career at just the age of 18 when they have just started to explore themselves. This decision can often go right but at times, it can also go wrong. We obviously don’t realize it immediately but after sometime. Instead of being stuck in the field, people prefer to switch careers.
However, it is not so easy to switch careers. There is a lot to consider before you switch. Therefore, ask yourself these qu estions when you plan to switch careers.
Do You Really Want It?
Before you start the process of career change and dig into new careers, the first thing is that you need to be sure. You have to ask yourself 100 times if you want to change or not and go ahead only if the answer is yes all the times.
Do consider making a pro and con list of your current career. Think about the reasons that could be pushing you for this career change. Don’t change your career if you are unhappy with your employer or your job environment. Make sure you need a career change and not just a job change before you go ahead.
What You Want To Do?
After you are sure that you want to change your career, get yourself to answer the most important question; what do you want to do? As you are still confused about what you want to do, it can be a tricky task. Also, coming from a field, it can influence your answer and confuse you further.
However, you have to focus and not get distracted but external factors. You need to think about what you really want to do and what you are good at.
Can You Afford It?
If you are planning to switch careers, then you must be ready to start at the bottom; be it income or status. I think this is a very important thing to consider. Losing status or money comes with a problem of affordability.
If you are planning to change careers, then you have to be ready for a lower status which comes with a pay cut which will require you to make several sacrifices in your life. Consider a change only if you are willing to make the sacrifices.
Is There Scope For Growth?
Another important question to ask yourself before a career change is that whether there is an opportunity for growth in the new field or not. It is not worth it to take a drastic step if you do not see diminishing opportunities in the new field.
It is necessary to ensure that your new career can give you plenty of opportunities to grow and explore. If you feel that you will not be able to grow professionally or even personally, then it’s not worth taking the risk.
Have You Talked To People In The Desired Field?
It is great idea to talk to people already working in the field and know about it. It will help you to know about the work, trends in your field and scope for growth. People already working in the field can give you a better view than any book or internet. This might also help you to enter the field and build your contacts for future opportunities.
