The Udupi Sri Krishna temple and Matha were established by Sri Madhwacharya during the 13th century. He also founded the Dwaita school of Vedanta. Legend has it that Madhwacharya discovered the idol of Sri Krishna within a large ball of gopichandana, a type of sandalwood. According to the Tantrasara Sangraha by Sri Madhvacharya, the idol is positioned Pashchimabhimukha, meaning facing west. This west-facing orientation is also observed in all other idols across the Ashta Muthas.
Devotees have the opportunity to view Krishna through two windows during darshan: the inner window called Navagraha Kindi, and the outer window known as Kanakana Kindi, embellished with an arch dedicated to the saint Kanakadasa.
According to Karnataka Tourism, “It is said that the Krishna idol here is the most beautiful idol of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is depicted here as a small boy (Balakrishna). The idol is not seen directly but through a 9 holed window called the Navagraha Kitiki. Udupi is referred to as ‘Mathura (birthplace of Lord Sri Krishna, situated in Uttar Pradesh state) of South India.”
