Meet Denver Pawlson, a golden retriever, hired as a Chief Happiness Officer (CHO) at a Hyderabad start-up. Rahul Arepaka, co-founder of tech company Harvesting Robotics, took to LinkedIn to share about their recruit in a heartfelt post that has now garnered over 15K reactions and more than 250 reposts. Calling it the “best decision,” he wrote that the cutie doesn’t “code, he doesn’t care. He just shows up, steals hearts, and keeps the energy up.” Having an animal in the office truly is beneficial for employees’ mental well-being. Here’s how your office can also make it work.

5 Ways Offices Can Hire Dogs as CHO

If you want to know more about Denver and his work, check out his LinkedIn profile (Yes, he has one, too!). The “About” section details exactly what his day-to-day KRAs (Key Responsibility Areas or Key Result Areas) are as a CHO, which has sent happy vibes throughout the social media platform. Netizens lauded the tech company’s decision while commenting that they too wish their offices had this system in place. So, if your employers are listening, here are 5 ways they can hire a CHO, as well:

1) Create Pet-Friendly Office Policy

Before deciding to have a CHO, offices must ensure to craft a pet-friendly office policy. The same should clearly outline guidelines and rules for the recruit in the workplace. If employees are given the task of pitching their “candidates,” the HR should specify the type, size, and breed. Also, the pet owner must be kept in the loop all along.

2) Make Designated Pet Areas

Even though the four-legged sweeties are always welcome, they must not be allowed everywhere. So, make pet-friendly areas in the office. Give them beds, toys to play with, and litter boxes for their nature calls. Clean and maintain the hygiene of these areas and their workstations.

3) Mandatory Training Requirements

The dog should be trained without fail before giving the CHO position. Unruly animals can cause disturbances and make the office atmosphere chaotic. So, the pet’s owner must ensure that they are given training as to how to behave in a workplace setting. Establish guidelines, set rules, and frame regulations for CHO-level behaviour. The company can provide resources for this training and behavioural coaching.

4) Allergy, Phobia Considerations

Now, let’s admit, not all are in sync with the thoughts of animals around them. So, before hiring any for the CHO position, take a survey. In a questionnaire, ask employees about their phobia, allergies to pet dander, and other issues they may have.

5) Health and Safety Precautions

Vaccinations are of utmost importance when it comes to guaranteeing the safety of the recruited animal and employees. So, the health checks and vaccinations must be up-to-date. Also, develop protocols in cases of pet incidents or accidents take place. Resources for the recruit’s wellness are mandatory to make sure no untoward occurrence happens.

A CHO will most definitely make employees happy and maintain a positive vibe all day long. Employee productivity might increase and the work environment will be enjoyable. But, having a canine colleague, full-time, may not be a feasible idea for all offices even though these measures, if implemented well, can surely make it easy.
