Start By Testing The Fabric Of Your Sofa
While most fabrics are usually not affected by baking soda or other such chemicals, there are some that do get discoloured or ruined due to the harsh chemicals. Therefore, in order to prevent your sofa from being ruined, it is better to perform a quick patch test.
Rub some baking soda and water at the backside of your sofa over a small region of the fabric, let it stay for 10 minutes, then wash it off with water and if you see any kind of discolouration or change in the fabric then go for a special solvent-based cleaner to clean your sofa. Since most fabrics do not react to baking soda, it is widely used for sofa cleaning.
Step By Step Sofa Cleaning
Things You Will Need
- A Soft Bristle Cleansing Brush
- Baking Soda
- Detergent Soap
- Warm Water
- Scrubbing Gloves
- Vacuum Cleaner
Step 1: Brush Out The Dirt
Using the soft brush, loosen the sofa fabric threads to release the dirt and dust debris trapped in them. All you have to do is start brushing the dry brush over the entire sofa and repeat the process a few times around. This could turn out to be a little tiresome, so, keep taking short breaks in between.
Step 2: Vacuum Cleaning
Cover the suction hole of the vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to prevent the fabric of your sofa from disintegration, and at medium to low suction, move the vacuum cleaner over your entire sofa. The vacuum will suck up the suspended dirt particles from the sofa and as a result, you will notice a visible difference already. Go over the fabric 1-2 times with the vacuum cleaner and then you’ll be done with step 2.
Step 3: Use Baking Soda
Taking some baking soda, sprinkle it over your couch/sofa, covering it completely. Take a simple dry brush, or a brush attachment over the vacuum cleaner and scrub the dirt out of the fabric thoroughly.
Step 4: Vinegar Wash
After doing that, make a solution of white vinegar and warm water in equal quantities, and spread it over the fabric of your sofa. Let it sit for 20 minutes.
Step 5: Washing/ Vacuum Brushing
Wash your sofa with as little water as possible, and then using a vacuum brush, remove all the baking soda-vinegar that is present on the fabric.
Step 6: Let The Sofa Dry
After shampooing your sofa, let it dry nicely. Finally, after everything is done, spray a fragrant mist over the entire sofa or make one at home using essential oils. Once you’re done, your sofa will look and smell as good as new, without even spending much money on it.
