Gujarat recently had its first-of-its-kind initiative of installing a condom vending machine in Shyam Medical in Dabholi Char Rasta, Surat by two students. Read on to know more.

A condom vending machine has been set up at Shyam Medical in Dabholi Char Rasta, Surat, Gujarat in a first-of-its-kind initiative. Condoms help in preventing unwanted pregnancy as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as HIV, which can result in AIDS.

Two pass-out engineers from S.S. Gandhi engineering college Surat named Bhavik Vora and Jigar Unagar invented this condom vending machine in Gujarat.

The machine has 3 steps: Select the product. Scan and pay. Collect product.

A condom vending machine is a device that sells condoms. In foreign countries in order to encourage safe sex, condom dispensers can be seen in public restrooms, train stations and airports. The company of Julius Fromm invented condom vending machines in 1928.

History Of Condom Vending Machines In India

CVMs

Mumbai also installed these condom vending machines in 2009, but due to a lack of planning and maintenance, it did not produce the expected outcomes. The government purchased and installed these machines in Mumbai at the cost of ₹2.57 crore, but sales have been poor. According to experts, the failure was partly caused by a lack of planning and research in choosing the installation sites and maintenance.

In 2008, Delhi also installed condom vending machines in some parking lots, petrol pumps, hospitals, toilets, shopping areas and office complexes.

In 2011, the healthcare company HLL Lifecare Ltd. installed a condom vending machine at the Kerala Technopark campus which has over 30,000 employees.

Incidents In The Past Where Condom Machines Were Installed But It Turned Out To Be Unsuccessful

1. The Union Health Ministry of New Delhi received criticism in 2013 for spending ₹21 crores to install approximately 22,000 condom vending machines (CVMs), of which 10,000 were later discovered to be missing and another 1,100 to be broken.

The CAG report stated that even condom sales following CVM installation under a National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) programme turned out to be far lower than anticipated, failing the goal for which the government had spent a significant amount of money on the device.

2. The Technopark complex in Thiruvananthapuram, which employs over 30,000 people, opted to install a condom vending machine in January 2011. HLL Lifecare Ltd was contracted to undertake the installation. But over time, the plumbers had to conduct a lot of work on the campus because condom-clogged toilet drains were discovered.
