The Government of Assam has stipulated a dress code for school teachers mentioning that some of the members of the teaching staff were in the habit of wearing casual clothing to work that did not seem acceptable to the public at large. Further to this order, the teachers have been asked to conduct classes wearing formal attire in sober colours.

The male teachers have been asked to wear only collared shirts and formal pants and female teachers have been asked to follow salwar suits, sarees and the region’s ethnic attire mekhela chador. The staff has been further directed to strictly avoid wearing party and casual wear to their workplace, based on the notification issued last week on Friday.

The order was shared on the social media platform Twitter on Saturday last week wherein Education Minister Ranoj Regu tweeted the notice with the preface, “ There are some misgivings regarding dress code prescribed for school teachers. I am sharing the notification for clarity.” The notice further said that it has been found that some teachers have been found in the habit of wearing the dress of their own choice which sometimes does not appear to be acceptable by the public at large.”
