The state of Kerala is known for it's high literacy rate which includes a high female literacy rate. But the news of a 104-year-old woman from the Kottayam district of Kerala, who scored 89 marks out of 100 in the Kerala State Literacy Mission’s test mesmerized everyone.

Education Minister V Sivankutty Shared The Story

Kerala's Education Minister, Vasudevan Sivankutty, shared a photo of 104-year-old Kuttiyamma on social media on Friday, wishing her the best after she did well in an exam conducted under the state government's continuing education initiative, Kerala State Literacy Mission’s test.

He tweeted, "104-year-old Kuttiyamma from Kottayam has scored 89/100 in the Kerala State Literacy Mission’s test. Age is no barrier to enter the world of knowledge. With utmost respect and love, I wish Kuttiyamma and all other new learners the best. #Literacy". A picture of the elder woman was also shared along with the tweet where she looks visibly ecstatic.

The state government funds the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority, which strives to promote literacy, continued education, and lifelong learning for all citizens. It was founded in 1998 with the goal of coordinating and promoting "literacy and continuing education." It currently provides equivalency programmes for the 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 12th standards.

Who Is 104-year-old Kuttiyamma?

Kuttiyamma is a 104-year-old woman from Kerala's Kottayam district. In the Kerala State Literacy Mission's test, she scored 89 out of 100 marks ( or 89%).  The Saksharatha (literacy) exam was held in the Ayarkunnam panchayat of the district. Notably, Kuttiyamma has never attended a school. She is able to read but cannot write. Kuttiyama was taught how to write by the Saksharatha Prerak Rehna.
