It is a proud moment for all Indians as Santiniketan gets inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 45th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Saudi Arabia that took place on Sunday. Santiniketan is the pride of West Bengal as the world-renowned poet, novelist and playwright Rabindranath Tagore built Visva Bharati University in 1901.
UNESCO tweeted their heartiest congratulations to India for yet another site added on the list. Further, PM Modi tweeted ‘a proud moment’ and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee extended her gratitude.

West Bengal is a land of diverse architecture and culture; here are some other UNESCO World Heritage Sites of West Bengal.
1. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999)
In the beautiful mountains of Darjeeling lies the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway which was inscribed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. This is a toy train service that was constructed between 1879 and 1881, lays over 13 stations and covers a distance of 78 km. It is the world’s first and highest mountain railway route.
2. Sundarban National Park (1987)
India’s very own delta formed by the flow of three major water bodies, Sundarban National Park (Wildlife Sanctuaries In India) is known for its rich flora and fauna. Its enticing beauty led UNESCO to name it on the list of World Heritage sites in 1987. The Sundarbans start from the land in West Bengal and extend up to Bangladesh. Here you can find royal Bengal tigers, reptiles, deer, etc.

3. Bishnupur Temples (1998)
Situated in the ancient town of Bankura, Bishnupur Temples (Beautiful Temples To Visit) are very well renowned for their Terracotta designs. This architecturally rich town was the capital of the Malla Kingdom in the olden times which were patrons of art and architecture. The breathtaking structures made the temples on the World Heritage list in 1998 tentatively.

4. Neora Valley National Park (2009)
Another site in West Bengal that is known for its greenery and the inhabiting creatures is Neora Valley National Park. This site made it to the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites tentatively in 2009. Belonging to the laps of the mountains in the Kalimpong district, this protected wildlife sanctuary inhabits a wide range of animals such as butterflies, birds, red pandas and deer.
