World Blood Donor Day 2024 History
The first documented blood transfusion was performed by Dr Richard Lower, a scientist who experimented with the process on two dogs in 1665. Years later in the early 1900s, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian biologist and physician, known as the founder of modern blood transfusion, classified blood into groups formulating a system. Since its discovery, blood donation and transfusions have become a key procedure in the healthcare industry.
June 14 is Landsteiner’s birthday first celebrated as World Blood Donor Day in 2005.
