To ensure the security of women in the state, Haryana Police announced its pilot project, 'Safe City' in Rohtak and Gurugram. Haryana Director General of police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur during a press conference in Rohtak said, "Maintaining law and order and providing a safe and secure atmosphere to the people, especially women, are among our top priorities.”
What Is 'Safe City' Project?
With the 'Safe City' project, the Haryana police will make dedicated efforts to ensure the safety of women using public transport to go to educational institutions and workplaces. Police will also coordinate with auto unions, cab unions, and public transporters under the project to create a safe and secure space for women of Haryana.
5 Reasons Why 'Safe City' Project Is The Need Of The Hour
- With the 'Safe City' project, CCTV cameras will be installed outside educational institutions, and security guards will be deployed. CCTV cameras play a key role in preventing crimes against women like abduction, sexual assault, and harassment. With CCTV, the police will be able to do real-time surveillance and prevent any crimes against women. With security guards in public spaces, women will feel an enhanced sense of safety and security.

- Haryana Police will be putting coordinated efforts into ensuring safe public transport for women in the state. Women are usually at a higher risk of experiencing gender-based violence while using public transportation like buses, and autos. Having a safe public transport system in place will reduce and prevent sexual harassment and assault cases and give women the freedom of movement.
- The 'Safe City' Project will have frequent police patrolling at certain places. Frequent patrols will serve as enough proof of the law enforcement in the area and further prevent crimes against women.
- Under the project, Haryana Police will be taking immediate action after registering an FIR in cases like eve-teasing in the state. Police pendency, and lack of support while filing an FIR are some reasons why a lot of women fail to get justice in India. With Haryana police taking prompt action with cases like eve-teasing, women now will have a glimmer of hope.
- The DGP also confirmed that there will be a prompt redressal of public grievances and complaints coming through any mediums and sorted in a week. Following that, feedback will also be taken from the complainants. Prompt action from the police will send a message to the state that no offenses against women will be tolerated and perpetrators will no longer roam freely.
For the 'Safe City' project, Haryana Police is training two police units in every district. Other than offline crimes, the DGP underlined the efforts being put to control cybercrime in the state by coordinating with banks and telecom companies. Haryana Police can be informed of cyber crimes on toll-free number 1930.
To deal with the drug menace, Haryana Police has introduced gram praharis and ward praharis who will identify drug addicts and drug peddlers in different areas and give information to the police.
