A video has been making rounds on the internet in which a man can be seen carrying a woman in his arms while taking rounds (pheras) around the fire. The clip is reported to be shot in an arid region near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
The horrific incident has left India in shock. According to media reports, the man abducted the woman and shot the video on June 1, 2023. She can be seen crying out loud while his family seems to be enjoying the sight of the crime.

Mint has reported that the 23-year-old woman was supposed to get married on June 12, 2023. the accused was threatening the girl’s family that he would disturb the wedding.
The victim’s family had protested in Jaisalmer asking authorities to intervene and take action so that justice could be served.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal shared the clip on Twitter and said that she read in reports that a woman had been abducted in Jaisalmer, and the accused had married her forcibly. “This is a shocking and frightening incident,” she added.
She tagged Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot seeking his intervention in the case. She requested an investigation of the case.
Jaisalmer Police replied to Maliwal’s tweet. It ensured that the incident happened on June 1, 2023, and the person carrying the woman in his arms has been arrested. The statement also said that the police are trying to arrest other accused involved in the kidnapping of the victim.

23,641 Females Were Abducted In 2017: NCRB Data
According to a report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 23,641 females abducted in 2017 with the intention of marriage. Out of the total, 10,526 victims were girl children, and 13,115 were adult women. It also stated that 84 boys and 414 men were kidnapped with the intention to marry.
In the same year, 70,686 females were abducted with different intentions, including unlawful activity, domestic servitude, pornography, terrorist activities, begging, murder, revenge, and ransom.
In 2021, 12,788 girls and 10,235 women were kidnapped for marriage. It recorded 50,401 cases in which women were abducted so that they could be compelled to marry. If you look at the total number of kidnappings of women in 2021, the number stood at 1,27,834.

In the past few months, India has witnessed several heinous crimes committed against women. This includes the murder case of Delhi’s Shahbad where a minor was stabbed in a fit of rage, Shraddha Walker’s case in which her live-in partner murdered her and cut her body into more than 30 pieces, and a young woman was dragged by a car for several kilometres in Delhi.
According to the NCRB report, 5,29,527 was the recorded number of investigations for the IPC crimes committed against women in 2021. Every day we hear of a new crime committed against women yet we talk the least about their safety.
