Wash Your Hands and Turn Off Equipment

Before starting, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid introducing harmful chemicals into the tank. Then, unplug the filtration system, heater, and lighting to ensure safety and prevent damage to equipment during cleaning.

Remove and Clean Decorations

Take out all decorations, such as rocks, plants, or synthetic décour, and place them in a separate bucket or on a towel. Scrub them gently using a designated brush or toothbrush under warm water. Avoid using detergents or soap, as these can harm your fish.

Scrub the Tank Glass

Use an acrylic-safe or glass scrubber to clean algae and debris from the sides of the tank. Be cautious when choosing a scrubber type to avoid scratching the glass or acrylic surface.

Vacuum the Gravel

Use a gravel vacuum or syphon to clean the substrate at the bottom of the tank. Insert the syphon into the gravel, allowing it to lift debris while leaving the substrate behind. Do not remove more than 25-50% of the water during this process to maintain beneficial bacteria levels.

Clean the Filter Media

Remove filter media (sponges, floss, or other components) and rinse them in a bucket filled with wastewater from the tank. This helps retain beneficial bacteria that are vital for maintaining water quality. Replace filter media only if it is falling apart.

Refill with Fresh Water

Prepare fresh water by adding a water conditioner to remove chlorine and other harmful chemicals. For saltwater tanks, add the appropriate amount of salt as per your system's requirements. Ensure that the water temperature matches that of your tank before slowly refilling it.

Reassemble and Restart Equipment

Return cleaned decorations to the tank and reconnect all equipment, including lights, heater, and filtration system. Prime the filter if necessary, following manufacturer instructions. Finally, wash your hands again to remove any contaminants.
