Each year Malayalis around the world gather to celebrate their poignant festival, Onam. The festival is a big deal in the southern state and the populace living around the world that belongs to the region. It is a prolonged ten day long affair that falls during the month of ‘Chingam’ which is between August and September. ‘Chingam’ is essentially in the first month of the Malayalam calendar.
The festive day is brought in as a marker of the celebration for the return of the demon king ‘Mahabali’ back to Earth. Mahabali was a devotee of the great ‘Lord Vishnu’ and one of the most generous kings as per the Hindu beliefs and scriptures.
